Divinópolis offers a range of reasons to stay: Parque da Ilha lies on the banks of the Rio Itapecerica, while museums explore the history of the railway and the city, and local traditions shape the cultural scene. You can plan your trip around your own interests—with outdoor activities, collections that preserve the community’s heritage, or a cultural event.
Green Space and Activities at Parque da Ilha
Parque da Ilha lies on the banks of the Rio Itapecerica and is one of Divinópolis’s largest green spaces. It offers a walking and cycling route, as well as a 1,500-square-metre skate park, one of the largest of its kind in Minas Gerais. This means the same park offers different activities: walking and cycling along the route, and skating in the large dedicated area. A municipal notice dated December 4, 2025, lists daily opening hours from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Check the hours, current access, and condition of the facilities before your visit.
Museums and Railway History
Since it was established in 1986, the Museu Histórico de Divinópolis has been housed in an old townhouse on Praça Dom Cristiano in the city centre. Its collection includes artworks and documents about the history and heritage of the community. The Estação de Memórias, an exhibition centre opened in 2023, offers a different thematic focus: its exhibition combines objects relating to railway history with texts about the city’s railway history. The two venues therefore have distinct focuses: the Museu Histórico brings together art and local heritage, while the Estação de Memórias puts the railway centre stage. If you want to learn about Divinópolis through its past, you can include both topics in your plans.
Cultural Heritage and Events
Divinaexpô is recognised as intangible cultural heritage of Divinópolis, under Law No. 8,995 of March 22, 2022. Since its first edition in 1970, it has been held annually at the Parque de Exposições of the Sindicato Rural de Divinópolis. The programme includes concerts by nationally renowned Sertanejo artists, as well as bull and horse riding competitions. Artists and competitions may vary from one edition to the next.
The Missa Conga has been celebrated in Divinópolis since 1977 and has been led by Frei Leonardo ever since; the proceedings may vary from one edition to another. Following the 48th Missa Conga, a procession in 2025 passed along Rua São Paulo, Avenida Antônio Olímpio, and Rua Rio de Janeiro to Praça do Santuário. At 4 p.m., the traditional Café de São Benedito was served there to the guards. These two traditions offer different ways to shape a culturally focused visit: Divinaexpô, with its concerts and competitions, and Missa Conga, with its religious customs.
