Capitólio can be viewed from two perspectives when planning a trip: the attractions in the town center and excursions in the municipality and the wider destination. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first decide which of these is more important for your stay. The options differ considerably: alongside central locations, there are waterfalls, boat trips, trails, and visits as part of the municipality’s rural tourism program.

Attractions in the Town Center

Praia Artificial Domingos Gonçalves Machado is in the center of Capitólio. Igreja de São Sebastião is also located in the town center. Both places give your stay a clear connection to the town, but offer different focuses: one is a place called an artificial beach, while the other is a church.

Nature and Activities in the Municipality of Capitólio

Morro do Chapéu is the municipality of Capitólio’s most traditional tourist attraction; the source of the Ambrósio is also located there. The Canyons de Furnas in the municipality offer a different connection with nature. They have waterfalls more than 30 meters high that visitors can reach. So, in addition to the striking viewpoint at Morro do Chapéu, waterfalls are another distinct focus to choose from.

The Canyons de Furnas can be explored by lancha or chalana boats departing from the harbor on the Rio Turvo. Visitors can travel into the canyons and swim in the reservoir. At Cachoeira da Capivara, visitors can reach waterfalls and natural pools via moderately difficult trails. The options therefore differ in concrete ways: the boat trip combines exploring the canyons with swimming in the reservoir, while at Cachoeira, trails provide access to waterfalls and natural pools.

Rota do Grotão is also part of the municipality of Capitólio’s Raízes do Campo rural tourism program. Visits to attractions along the route must be arranged in advance. Keep this requirement in mind when planning and arrange your visit before traveling. Rota do Grotão thus offers a different kind of excursion from boat trips or trails to waterfalls: visits require a prior arrangement.

More Options in the Wider Capitólio Destination

Mirante dos Canyons has a suspension bridge and a viewing platform above the canyon. Ziplining over the canyon and rappelling down the quartzite walls are also offered. The viewpoint therefore combines views over the canyon with two activities on or above the rock walls. Which of these options interests you depends on whether you are mainly looking for a view or an activity at the canyon.

Parque Ecoturístico Trilha do Sol offers hiking trails to three main waterfalls: Cachoeira Poço Dourado, Cachoeira do Grito, and Cachoeira No Limite. Birdwatching is also possible there. The waterfalls and birdwatching appeal to different interests within the same park; the trails to the three main waterfalls also give the visit a clear focus on nature. The stated highlights are therefore useful for comparing Trilha do Sol, Mirante dos Canyons, and the options in the municipality.

The destination can also be understood in terms of its landscape beyond any single attraction: According to Decree No. 70,355 of April 3, 1972, part of the municipality of Capitólio lies within the estimated 200,000-hectare area of Parque Nacional da Serra da Canastra. Along with the waterfalls, canyons, and nature offerings, this regional connection shows that planning can take into account not only the central attractions but also excursions in the wider destination.
