Capitólio offers a variety of ways to experience nature: at Mirante dos Canyons, a suspension bridge and an observation platform overlook the canyon; boat trips take visitors into the Canyons de Furnas, and hiking trails lead to waterfalls. When looking for a vacation rental, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on: views and activities on the cliffs, a trip on the reservoir, or trails to waterfalls. There is also a route that must be arranged in advance and a cultural landmark in the municipality.

Canyon Views and Trips on the Water

Mirante dos Canyons has a suspension bridge and an observation platform overlooking the canyon. Ziplining over the canyon and rappelling down the quartzite walls are also offered there. This means you can choose between views and active experiences on the cliffs at the same named site.

Near Capitólio, the quartzite walls of the Canyons de Furnas reach heights of 20 to 60 meters. Motorboats can reach the Canyons de Furnas and travel inside them; on a boat trip departing from the port on the Rio Turvo, you can enter the canyons and swim in the reservoir's waters. This offers a choice between an outing with views and cliff activities, and a trip into the canyons with the option of swimming in the reservoir.

Hiking Trails to Waterfalls

At Parque Ecoturístico Trilha do Sol, hiking trails lead to three main waterfalls: Cachoeira Poço Dourado, Cachoeira do Grito and Cachoeira No Limite. Birdwatching is also possible there. This gives nature outings a different focus from the boat trips: the trails lead to named destinations, while birdwatching offers a second nature-focused activity in the same park.

Visits to Plan in Advance

The Rota do Grotão is part of the municipal rural tourism program Raízes do Campo. Visits to its attractions must be arranged in advance. Keep this in mind when planning your trip and confirm the arrangements again before your visit, as they may change.

According to Decree No. 70.355 of April 3, 1972, part of the municipality of Capitólio lies within the estimated 200,000-hectare area of Parque Nacional da Serra da Canastra.

Culture and the Wider Context of Minas Gerais

Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião is part of the historical and cultural heritage of the municipality of Capitólio. Alongside nature excursions, this provides a clearly identified cultural landmark to consider when choosing your travel interests.

Across the wider destination of Minas Gerais, 94 protected areas safeguard nearly two million hectares in the Atlantic Forest, Cerrado and Caatinga biomes; tourism is established in 17 state nature parks. The cultural context can also be broadened to include Minas Gerais: the craft of bell ringers and the artisanal production of Minas cheese are recognized as Brazilian cultural heritage.
