Caeté can be explored through a range of cultural and landscape themes: the protected historic center in Sede, the Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso, the Museu Regional de Caeté, and the connections with Serra da Piedade and the Rota do Ferro. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between these aspects. Protected status, museum work, landscape history and a route through several places appeal to different interests. You can decide which of these matters most to you based on these distinctions between places and themes.

Cultural Heritage in Sede and the Municipality of Caeté

The historic center of Caeté in Sede is protected under Municipal Decree No. 202 of November 17, 2011. The Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso is also located in Sede. It has been listed as cultural heritage at the federal level since June 13, 1938. Its listing is in the Livro Belas Artes and bears process number 67-T-38 and listing number 115.

The protections differ in scope: the municipal decree concerns the historic center, while the federal listing concerns the church. Thus, an area and an individual building, each with its own protected status, stand alongside one another. For a cultural-history focus, Caeté offers more than one point of interest, without the two listings referring to the same subject.

Another point of interest is the landscape, artistic and cultural ensemble of the Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Piedade in the municipality of Caeté. A 2012 decree by the state of Minas Gerais designates it as a tourist attraction of special significance. This designation applies to the ensemble as a whole and brings together the three dimensions mentioned. Alongside the protected historic center and the listing of the parish church, it broadens the view to include a site shaped by its landscape, whose special tourist significance is recognized at the state level.

The Museu Regional: Education and Crafts

The Museu Regional de Caeté combines educational work with the preservation of cultural traditions. Its educational programs are tailored to the needs of the municipality of Caeté and the region, with particular attention to students from the city and the region. The museum preserves the cultural heritage, knowledge and craft traditions of the people of Caeté and its districts.

The museum’s activities also include courses and workshops on traditional craft techniques from the region. Its work therefore focuses both on educational programs for a specifically identified audience and on preserving regional knowledge and craft practices.

Serra da Piedade: Landscape and Settlement History

Serra da Piedade is closely connected with the history of the Bandeirantes and the associated settlement of the territory of Minas Gerais. At the same time, it is one of the region’s most significant landscape landmarks. The combination of these two aspects makes it a distinct historical landscape theme: the focus is not only on its importance as a landmark, but also on the history of settlement.

Rota do Ferro: Railway Relics and Non-Motorized Activities

A municipal tourism article dated July 12, 2021, describes the Rota do Ferro as a route approximately 80 kilometers long. It begins in Sabará, passes through Caeté and Barão de Cocais, and ends in Santa Bárbara; the distance refers to the entire route described. Along the way, the article mentions ruins such as abandoned railway stations, parts of former structures and small tunnels. The route follows the course of the former, disused Ramal Nova Era (EFSSB).

The description specifies that the route is intended exclusively for non-motorized sports, including cycling, horseback riding, walking, trail running and other non-motorized activities. This distinguishes the Rota do Ferro from a motorized tour. Check the condition of the route and its infrastructure before your trip.
