Arantina’s attractions include water and forest, traces of local history, festivals and sweeping views. If you’re looking for a holiday rental for your stay, having a clear focus can help you choose: would you mainly like to discover natural swimming pools and forest, explore historic sites, or travel for a particular event?
Waterfalls and Forest
At Cachoeira do Viaduto, several natural pools follow one after another. Small bathing spots and natural showers for a hydromassage define this waterside location. This sequence of pools distinguishes it from Poço do Caroço, whose features include a waterfall and a pool suitable for swimming.
Poço do Caroço is surrounded by well-preserved Atlantic rainforest, home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. There, a waterfall about 3 metres high forms a natural shower, and the pool is also suitable for swimming. This spot brings water and forest together, while Cachoeira do Viaduto offers a different experience with its series of pools and natural hydromassage showers.
Local History and Historic Buildings
The ruins of the former Cerâmica are marked by large towers. They are considered an attraction and document Arantina’s development. Another historic landmark is Estação de Arantina, which was inaugurated in 1914. Today, the renovated building houses the Municipal Tourism Secretariat and a tourist information centre. Check current access arrangements before visiting.
The Museu de Arantina presents the history of the entire area through old objects from the município and the region. It is housed in an old mansion that was among the first houses in the town and served as its first shop. The building also includes a library and a large courtyard with centuries-old trees. In 2024, the museum was closed for renovations. Check whether it has since reopened before visiting.
Festivals Throughout the Year
The annual Encontro de Folias de Reis de Arantina takes place in early January. Traditional music and dances are part of the event. The festival is a distinct reason to travel for anyone interested in regional festive traditions; check the specific event dates before your trip.
The Cavalgada de Arantina takes place in early March, alongside the município’s anniversary of political emancipation on 1 March. Its religious, social and cultural programme includes Masses, various shows, a gait competition and Futebol de Botina. Check the dates for this event before travelling, too.
Highland Views of the Region
Capela do Espraiado stands at an altitude of 1,297 metres and offers sweeping views of the region’s highland fields. At Mirante da Grota, the viewpoint sits at 1,389 metres, with 360-degree views across the region. The descriptions highlight different landscape features: the highland fields at the Capela, and the panoramic views at the Mirante.
