Santa Inês can be explored through its distinctive origins, a cityscape shaped by religion and Lago do Remanso. These themes offer different ways to connect with the place.

A city on the railway line

Santa Inês was founded under the original name “Ponta da Linha” at the terminus of a railway built in 1884 by Companhia Progresso Agrícola. The railway connected sugarcane plantations to the Engenho Central in Pindaré-Mirim. A private railway ran from the original settlement to the Engenho Central, serving to transport sugarcane production.

Rua do Comércio also tells the story of this economic era: it was formerly called Rua da Boiada and was the route along which ox carts transported sugarcane to the Engenho in Pindaré. The historic site of Ponta da Linha is now the administrative seat of Santa Inês. The original settlement developed around Praça da Matriz—so the town’s history stretches from the railway line to its central square.

Praça da Matriz and culture

In the center is Paróquia Santa Inês – Igreja Matriz, at Praça da Matriz. The new Igreja Matriz de Santa Inês was inaugurated in 1985 and became a landmark of the city. Praça da Matriz is known for its strong cultural and religious significance.

Popular cultural forms present in Santa Inês in November 2024 included Tambor de Crioula, Quadrilha, Festa do Divino Espírito Santo, Bumba-meu-Boi and Capoeira, as well as Indigenous dance, Gypsy dance and Portuguese dance. A culinary event at Praça da Matriz was the “Primeiro Festival do Hambúrguer” on May 29, 2026, featuring regional flavors and live music.

Cultural context in Maranhão

In the state of Maranhão, Bumba meu boi do Maranhão was listed as Brazilian cultural heritage in 2011 and recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2019. Tambor de Crioula do Maranhão was recognized as Brazilian cultural heritage in 2007. Each of these traditions has its own forms: the Bumba meu boi festival cycle consists of rehearsals, the blessing of the ox, performances and the ritual of its death. During the June festival cycle, Bumba meu boi brings communities together in a celebration that combines faith, music, dance, theater and traditional knowledge.

Tambor de Crioula is practiced in virtually every municipality in Maranhão and combines dance, singing and percussion. The rodas may take place in terreiros, backyards, streets or squares; there is no fixed calendar or designated venue. These regional insights complement the overview of the cultural forms mentioned in Santa Inês without specifying individual performance dates.

Lago do Remanso and choosing where to stay

Some of Santa Inês’s main tourist attractions are beaches and lakes, including Lago do Remanso. It is considered especially scenic, and Lago do Remanso is said to be about 11 kilometers long. Along with railway history and Praça da Matriz, the landscape is also a central theme when considering Santa Inês as a travel destination.
