Codó can be explored through several distinct themes: Terecô as a religious and cultural manifestation, public festival programs, and places with religious or urban history. There are also events focused on agriculture, local products, and handicrafts. The offerings have different emphases—from spiritual connections and June festivals to markets and agricultural fairs.

Terecô, religious connections, and places from the city’s history

Terecô is a religious and cultural manifestation deeply rooted in Codó’s identity. The city officially recognized its significance in November 2025. Terecô attracts worshippers, researchers, and tourists from various regions of Brazil. The tradition thus shapes both the city’s religious and cultural image.

The Santuário Menino Jesus is also one of Codó’s religious landmarks. It is regarded as such and attracts worshippers and pilgrims seeking spirituality. Those who place religious sites at the center of their trip will find another distinct point of interest here, alongside Terecô.

The new Praça São Pedro is opposite the Igreja de São Pedro. The square offers people of all ages greater comfort, safety, and recreational opportunities. The church was inaugurated in 1995; a description from 2014 called it one of Codó’s most visited places. This historical context complements the more recent description of the square, but it is not a current visitor count.

The former railway station building is also connected with the city’s history. A description from 2017 placed the Memorial de Codó and the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico de Codó there. The building had been restored by IPHAN.

June festivals and events with different focuses

The traditional baptism of Boi Raízes do Maranhão at Praça São Sebastião opened the June festival season in Codó in 2026. Traditional arraiais were held in the city’s neighborhoods and communities throughout the month. The baptism therefore marked the start of the season at a named square, while the arraiais were spread across several neighborhoods and communities. The Julino Festival at Praça São Sebastião, in turn, had its own distinct focus: the 2026 edition, which has concluded, featured quadrilha dances, Bumba-meu-boi groups, regional dances, and other cultural performances.

The 2026 Julino Festival also included typical foods and an atmosphere geared toward families, visitors, and tourists. The various program items show that June festival culture was not limited to dance performances. For trip planning, it is helpful to distinguish between the opening event, the arraiais held in neighborhoods and communities, and the program at Praça São Sebastião. The activities mentioned refer to the 2026 edition and are not a calendar for future years.

ExpoCodó 2025 had a different focus. The agricultural fair ran from July 26 to August 3 and was described, for that edition, as one of the largest agricultural fairs in the state of Maranhão. Its program included livestock exhibitions, talks, auctions, performances by local artists, and the sale of agricultural products. ExpoCodó therefore differed significantly in both subject matter and program from the religious and cultural June festival events.

Local products and planning your stay

At the seventh Feira da Agricultura Familiar e Artesanato in February 2026, visitors could buy fresh produce and handmade goods directly from producers. The offerings may vary from one edition to the next. Direct sales make the fair a different way to discover local products than the agricultural fair, with its exhibitions, talks, and auctions.

The Economia Criativa project was also presented in August 2026. It was intended to offer visitors and tourists a new place at Praça São Sebastião to discover and purchase products made in Codó. The initiative was described as weekly. Before your trip, check whether it is actually operating now; describing it as a planned offering does not confirm that it is currently active.

If you want a festival to determine when you stay, check the dates for your chosen travel year before booking your vacation rental. This way, you can plan around the specific edition instead of treating past event dates as a calendar for the future.
