The Igreja Matriz de Buriti brings together a historic site and the city’s religious tradition: it houses the parish church of Santa Ana, Buriti’s patron saint. The Festejo de Nossa Senhora Sant’Ana is also dedicated to this patron saint. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing the church’s enduring connection from the specific festival program and checking dates in advance.

Church and Festival Culture

The Igreja Matriz is considered an emblematic historic site in the city. Its importance is reflected both in its role as the parish church of Santa Ana and in the festivals held in honor of the patron saint. The Festejo de Nossa Senhora Sant’Ana is the traditional festival of the Município de Buriti. Buriti therefore offers a clear cultural point of interest for travelers interested in religious traditions and the history of a place.

A specific example of how the festival is organized comes from 2022: during the Festejo, the festival mast was on display at Lago Cultural de Sant’Ana from July 16 to 26. A celebration was held in 2022 in front of Palácio Bernardo Almeida on Praça Matriz.

Lago Cultural de Sant’Ana is near the Igreja Matriz. This makes it possible to distinguish between two important locations associated with the Sant’Ana tradition: the parish church and the festival site at the lake. For your trip, the main consideration is whether you plan to visit Buriti independently of the festival or time your stay to coincide with a particular edition of the Festejo. If the festival is the reason for your trip, check the dates in advance.

Historic Sites in the Município

Another historic site is in the povoado Santa Cruz, within the Município de Buriti but outside the city center: the approximately 300-year-old Casarão Santa Cruz. The building is protected as a heritage site by the state of Maranhão. Its location within the municipality is useful to keep in mind when visiting Buriti’s sites: the Casarão is part of the Município, but visiting it is not the same as visiting the city center.

The Capela Nossa Senhora da Vitória is located beside the Casarão and continues to be used by the family. The house and chapel are therefore closely linked by location but have different associations: the Casarão is protected as a historic building, while the chapel is shaped by its continued use by the family. For culture enthusiasts, Santa Cruz offers its own perspective on the history of the municipality, alongside the festival sites near the Igreja Matriz.

A Swimming Spot in the Município

The Município de Buriti is also home to Balneário Piscina Bar, a public swimming pool. It offers a different possible reason to visit, complementing the historic and religious attractions. Before planning a visit, check the current access arrangements and condition.

Buriti thus offers a range of points of interest that differ geographically and thematically: the Igreja Matriz and the Sant’Ana tradition, the Casarão in the povoado Santa Cruz, and the swimming pool in the Município.
