Visitors to Goiás can choose between a historic city protected as a heritage site, museums and destinations in the Cerrado. The Historic Centre of Goiás was listed by IPHAN in 1978 and recognized as a World Heritage site on December 16, 2001. Different timing considerations also matter when planning your visit: museum opening hours, an event during Holy Week and nature destinations, each with their own visiting conditions.

World Heritage, Literature and Collections

The recognition of the Historic Centre applies to its architectural, landscape and urban ensemble. The focus is therefore not on a single building, but on how these aspects come together in the historic centre. The two dates mark the timeline of the designations: first the heritage listing by IPHAN, followed later by recognition as a World Heritage site.

Literary history comes to life at the Museu Casa de Cora Coralina: the house where Cora Coralina made sweets and wrote verses was converted into a museum. The site connects her writing with domestic life, which is also part of its history.

The Museu Palácio Conde dos Arcos now serves as a centre for cultural activities. Its opening hours, listed as of September 9, 2026, are Tuesday through Saturday, 08:00 to 17:00, and Sundays and public holidays, 08:00 to 13:00. Check the hours before your visit.

The collection at the Museu de Arte Sacra da Boa Morte comprises about 1,041 pieces. These include sacred art, liturgical objects, silverwork and liturgical vestments. The museum is in the historic centre; its collection offers a different thematic perspective from the literature museum and the Palácio Conde dos Arcos.

Cerrado Landscapes and Views

The Parque Estadual da Serra Dourada protects about 56 kilometres of the Serra Dourada and is located in the municipalities of Goiás, Buriti de Goiás and Mossâmedes. Its described features include rich biodiversity, distinctive rock formations and numerous clear-water springs. Nature is the focus of the protected area, while the view from Morro das Lajes takes in the city and Serra Dourada together.

Cachoeira das Andorinhas lies in a densely forested Cerrado landscape. Water cascades through a grotto, forming a cold natural shower; the river also offers a place to swim. Local access conditions can change, so check them before your visit.

The Morro das Lajes viewpoint is in the Parque Natural da Estrada Imperial. An approximately 1,600-metre-long trail leads there from Largo da Carioca. From the top, the view stretches across the city and Serra Dourada. The approximate trail length gives you a concrete planning reference for this viewpoint without specifying a walking time.

Hiking Route and Event Dates

The Caminho de Cora Coralina is an established route for hikers and cyclists. A historic landmark at Parque da Carioca connects the route to Goiás. Information about basic infrastructure, as well as accommodation and food options along the entire route, comes from the 2022 tourism inventory; check it before setting out.

The Procissão do Fogaréu begins at midnight on the Wednesday of Holy Week and brings scenes of the Passion through the streets of Goiás. Its timing is tied to Holy Week, so check the event date for your travel year. This makes it possible to plan this religious event separately from visits to museums and nature destinations.

The Festival Nacional de Cinema e Vídeo Ambiental (FICA) has been held annually in Goiás since 1999. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the specific event dates. The Festival de Gastronomia e Cultura da Cidade de Goiás was founded in 2005 to promote regional and local cuisine, preserve traditions and incorporate elements of the Cerrado as a point of reference. Check its current dates before planning your trip as well.

Plan Your Stay

The attractions have different timing considerations: the Museu Palácio Conde dos Arcos has daily opening hours, the Procissão takes place at midnight on the Wednesday of Holy Week, and the current dates are key for the festivals. Use these details to guide your search according to your travel plans and the visits you actually want to include.
