Catalan can be explored especially through its Congada tradition and the connection between the city’s history and nature. The Congada has been held in Catalan since 1876; every year, Congadas shape the city during the first half of October, as part of the Festa de Nossa Senhora do Rosário. The exact festival dates vary. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the dates for that year. The museum, protected historic sites, and nature offer other points of interest.
Congada and Festival Season
At Largo do Rosário in the city center, Congada groups come together for the pilgrims’ procession, the Sunday night procession, and the handover of the crown. In June 2025, the inclusion of Catalan’s Congadas in the Livro dos Saberes of the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (Iphan) was unanimously approved. The annual festival calendar and this approved inclusion show two distinct aspects of the same tradition: its place in the yearly cycle and its cultural recognition.
City History and Protected Sites
The Museu Histórico Municipal Cornélio Ramos is an important place of remembrance in Catalan. Its extensive collection ranges from documents and photographs to paintings and sculptures, as well as handicrafts, artifacts, and other objects that document the city’s history. As an institution, the museum also preserves and presents Catalan’s social and artistic heritage. It is housed in the former railway station, which was protected as part of the city’s cultural heritage in 2001. In this way, the history of the museum building connects with the subjects represented in its collection.
Morro da Saudade, also called Colina dos Poetas, was protected as part of Catalan’s historic heritage in 1994, together with its chapel. Unlike the museum building, this protected site consists of a hill and a chapel. These are different forms of urban heritage: a former railway station and a protected site with a chapel.
Nature, Activity, and Planning
A trail in Parque Paquetá combined exercise with close contact with nature. An environmental trail event in February 2026 covered a six-kilometer route and aimed to raise awareness of the protection of the local ecosystem. On March 5, 2026, children took part in a walk in the park to conclude an event. Hands-on learning, direct contact with nature, and reflection on protecting natural areas were all part of the experience. The examples emphasize different aspects: a specified route length and an educational walk.
Tents for food trucks and sales stands are planned at Feira Parque. If you are planning to stop there for a meal, check in advance what will be available at your chosen time.
A municipal report dated December 17, 2024, described Parque Ecológico Severo Gomides Neto as under construction at the time. Plans called for three levels of water features covering a total of 43,487 m². Unlike the activities at Parque Paquetá, this is a planned landscape project with specifically identified water features. If you are considering visiting this park during your stay, check its current status in advance.
