Those wishing to get to know Araçu through its rural traditions will find a distinctive cultural landmark in the ox-cart procession. The Encontro de Carreiros e Cavaleiros brings together the carrear tradition with religious and community elements. The town’s founding story and a regional long-distance hiking project shed light on other aspects of this destination.

Ox Carts and Rural Customs

The Encontro de Carreiros e Cavaleiros was founded in 2008 and has reached its 17th edition. It takes place annually in the municipality of Araçu during the first week of May; if you are planning your trip around it, check the date in advance. The gathering preserves rural traditions and honors practices that are part of the region’s cultural identity. Families in Araçu preserve the carrear tradition as a symbol of rural life. The ox-cart procession is not limited to its religious dimension: it also brings together customs, traditions, and forms of organization.

A Founding Story Dating to 1914

According to the founding story, Araçu’s history began in 1914, when Jose Jacinto da Silva, the owner of land along the Córrego Salobro, donated part of it to the Catholic Church for the construction of a chapel and the founding of the town. Also in 1914, a Cruzeiro was erected in the forecourt thought to have been intended for the Capela de São Sebastião do Salobro. This story of the chapel’s founding stands alongside the rural customs preserved by families as a distinct cultural point of interest.

Pilgrimage Route and Distinct Traditions

In the 2023 pilgrimage of Araçu’s Carreiros to Trindade, the route was divided into four overnight stops. In 2023, the Comitivas dos Carreiros de Araçu set out for Trindade; before the journey, there was a religious blessing and a shared lunch. It is worth distinguishing the places involved: Araçu hosts an ox-cart procession, while Trindade has held an annual ox-cart pilgrimage in honor of Pai Eterno since the mid-19th century. The annual date of the Encontro and the departure specifically described for 2023 are therefore different points in time.

There is also a historical example of religious elements at the Encontro: in 2019, at the beginning of the evening, a service was held at one of the city’s rest stops, with preparation and evangelization for all visitors. Father Márcio Celestino of the Paróquia Santa Rita de Cássia de Araçu took part.

Long-Distance Hiking in the Regional Context

Araçu was involved in a cooperation agreement to develop the Caminho das Goiabeiras, a regional long-distance hiking trail in Brazil’s national long-distance trail network. The agreement, signed in 2022, was valid until 2025. If you are planning a hike on the trail, check its current operating status in advance.
