The Rio Itaúnas runs through Pedro Canário and helps orient visitors to the area. The municipality’s historical identity is also connected to several developments: the timber cycle, agriculture—particularly coffee growing—and the construction of the BR-101 highway. These topics offer a glimpse into different aspects of local history.

Local Culture and Culinary Tradition

One specific cultural landmark is the altar of Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora de Fátima. It is adorned with an oil-on-canvas fresco by the Italian artist Fernando Vignolli. The work is titled “Cristo Ressuscitado Sobre a Cidade de Pedro Canário.”

Traditional beiju is also part of the local food culture: it is made in Pedro Canário and sold mainly at municipal and state festivals, as well as at markets in the state of Espírito Santo. For visitors, the connection with these festivals and markets is of particular interest; this does not include a tasting or workshop.

Festivals in Different Locations

The Tábua Lascada festival takes place every year in downtown Pedro Canário. The Vaquejada is also held annually, but in Cristal do Norte. Dates for both may vary, so if you are planning to travel specifically for an event, check the latest dates and program.

Another annual event is the Cavalgada Sem Fronteira. It starts in Pedro Canário and ends at a rural property in Bahia. Its stated start and finish locations distinguish it from the festivals downtown and in Cristal do Norte; route details may change.

Waterfalls and Nature Trails

Fazenda Barra Mansa offers approximately 2,000 meters of ecological trails. Its flora includes orchids, ferns and bromeliads, among others; its fauna includes armadillos, pacas, ocelots and capybaras. Trail conditions may change. Córrego do Engano is another natural attraction, with waterfalls used by bathers; water conditions may vary.

To reach Córrego do Engano, the directions follow the ES-209 toward Pedro Canário–Cristal do Norte, at around kilometer 17. After about 20 minutes of driving, you reach the area of the concrete bridge; the attraction is beneath the bridge. Check road conditions and landmarks before setting out.

The Cachoeira dos Pretos is considered Pedro Canário’s main tourist attraction. It is on the Rio Itaúnas, about 25 km from the municipal seat. Cachoeira Criminosa is another tourist waterfall in Pedro Canário. The municipality’s tourist route also includes the Vale do Rio Itaúnas near the municipal seat, ecological trails in Taquaras and natural streams in Cristal do Norte. These place names describe different points of reference, not a set route connecting them.

Leisure Area and Getting There

A description published on February 18, 2025, lists sports facilities and paths for walking and cycling in the leisure area of Lagoa Augusto Ruschi. These include a multipurpose sports court, a society football field with artificial turf, sand courts, a skate park and a permanent stage for cultural events. The description also mentions more than 1,300 trees and shrubs planted in the area. The sports and leisure complex includes a walking path; individual facilities may change.

Pedro Canário can be reached via the BR-101 Norte and via Linhares and São Mateus. Check current navigation for your specific journey. When planning your trip, you can weigh the area’s different attractions: waterfalls and trails, the festivals mentioned, or leisure and cultural offerings within the municipality.
