Discover Conceição da Barra through its coastal landscape, town history and vibrant traditions. For planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between the beaches and cultural sites in the town itself and destinations in Itaúnas, which is also part of the Municipality of Conceição da Barra. This will help you decide whether to focus on the sea and town center or also include the dunes and history of Itaúnas.

Beaches and waterfront paths

Praia de Conceição da Barra has a wide stretch of sand and faces the open sea. It is suitable for walking, swimming in the sea and taking in the landscape. Praia da Barra frames the center of Conceição da Barra, where there is a promenade and a bike path. The coastal landscape thus offers options both for spending time on the beach and for walking along the town center. Which of these experiences defines your stay depends on whether you prefer to linger by the sea or include the promenade and bike path in your plans.

Lighthouse and architectural history in town

Farol da Barra is a historic monument on Praia do Farol, 50 meters from the center of Conceição da Barra. The lighthouse, acquired from France, was built in 1914 and modified in 1928. While in operation, it served as a navigational aid: its light flashed twice at 30-second intervals. There are parking spaces and skateboard ramps nearby.

The center is also home to Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, built in the 19th century on Praça Prefeito José Luiz da Costa. Its architecture preserves features of Espírito Santo’s 16th-century Jesuit buildings. The square thus brings together the history of church construction and an older architectural influence.

On the Rio São Mateus (Cricaré) stands a building that the Portuguese man João Bastos de Almeida Pinto had built in 1786. Today, it is home to the Casa da Cultura “Hermógenes Lima da Fonseca” of Conceição da Barra. If you plan to visit, check locally for current visitor access.

Traditions and regional flavors

Reis de Boi is an old folk tradition that is still kept alive in Conceição da Barra. The tradition includes a procession marking the death of the Boi, accompanied by accordions, tambourines and guitars. Werewolves and the Loba also appear.

In the center is Laboratório do Altair, known internationally for its cachaça and regional fruit batidas. The passion fruit version is especially noteworthy. If you plan to include the establishment in your itinerary, check whether it is currently open before visiting.

Itaúnas in the Municipality of Conceição da Barra

Destinations in Itaúnas are also part of the Municipality of Conceição da Barra. The Dunas de Itaúnas are located in the District of Itaúnas, 29 km north of Conceição da Barra. The white, fine sand dunes are within Parque Estadual de Itaúnas and are classified as cultural heritage by the Conselho de Estado da Cultura. This landscape, together with its conservation and cultural connections, makes Itaúnas a distinct focus within the municipality, separate from the beaches and buildings in the town.

The history of Itaúnas includes the old Vila de Itaúnas, which was gradually buried by sand. The residents then moved to the opposite riverbank and founded the new Vila de Itaúnas there. In January, Itaúnas also hosts the festivals of São Sebastião and São Benedito, whose cultural performances include Ticumbi. The traditional Festival Nacional de Forró de Itaúnas takes place in July. If you plan your trip around one of these events, check the specific dates in advance.
