Baixo Guandu can be explored through several distinct landmarks: the Rio Guandu, a tributary of the Rio Doce, crosses the municipality; there are also buildings, ceramics and natural attractions. When choosing where to stay, it is therefore worth considering whether you want to focus on local history, viewpoints or nature on the municipal boundaries. Baixo Guandu is one of nine municipalities in the Doce Pontões Capixaba tourism region in the state of Espírito Santo.
River, Bridges and Local History
The Igreja Matriz de São Pedro is among the places listed as tourist attractions in Baixo Guandu. Another architectural landmark is the Edifício Madame Albertina Holz, an example of early 20th-century architecture in Espírito Santo. The history of its bridges reaches beyond the municipal boundary: the Ponte Jones dos Santos Neves, also known as Ponte Mauá, was the first connection between Baixo Guandu and the Mauá district in Aimorés, in the state of Minas Gerais. The current Ponte Mauá was inaugurated in 1981 and is in use.
Ceramics are also part of the local identity: Baixo Guandu is known as the land of ceramics, and several factories are located in its neighborhoods. So, alongside its church and bridges, the municipality’s image also includes craft and production. These different themes let you choose between architectural history and local ceramic traditions without limiting your visit to a single focus.
Waterfalls, Heights and Views
At Mirante do Rosário II, there is a viewpoint from which you can look out over Baixo Guandu. Check the condition of the site before visiting. Cachoeira Alto Laje lies on the boundary between Baixo Guandu and Itaguaçu and is surrounded by areas of preserved Atlantic Forest vegetation. Pedra do Souza reaches an elevation of 465 meters and lies between Baixo Guandu and Aimorés. The landscape attractions therefore differ in their settings: Alto Laje is defined by the municipal boundary and vegetation, while Pedra do Souza stands out for its elevation and location between two municipalities.
Cachoeira de Água Santa is in the district of Ibituba; in 2017, it was listed as a tourist attraction in Baixo Guandu. Check access before visiting. Parque da Lagoa was opened for walks in 2019. Before your visit, check the current condition of the paths so you do not mistake this past opening for a statement about their present condition.
