Capela Nossa Senhora de Fátima stands atop a hill in the Monte Castelo neighborhood. From there, you can see parts of Solonópole, especially the tower of Igreja Matriz de Bom Jesus and the sunset. This viewpoint leads into a local history shaped by religious buildings, traditions and local customs.

Churches, Chapels and Religious Traditions

Igreja Matriz do Bom Jesus Aparecido is a colonial-style church built between 1813 and 1821. Together with the Ruínas da Capela de Nossa Senhora do Monte, it is one of the attractions on the state of Ceará’s religious tourism route. This designation is based on State Law No. 19.413, enacted on September 5, 2025.

Capela Nossa Senhora de Fátima was completed around 1935 and inaugurated on January 14, 1936. The Centro Social Religioso e Turístico was built around it and named after Maria Ambrosina Pinheiro Cavalcante. The chapel and center are another point of reference for Solonópole’s religious history.

The tradition surrounding Bom Jesus Aparecido is also part of this story. According to the account, a crucifix found at Fazenda Cachoeira was eventually placed in a chapel and made accessible to the faithful for viewing and veneration. The tradition is associated with an ongoing pilgrimage to the fazenda where the image is said to have been found.

Local History, Crafts and Events

Museu Municipal Riacho do Sangue preserves local history through artifacts that portray everyday life and the culture of the Sertão Cearense. Local craft traditions include hammock weaving and embroidery. The town’s former name also points to its history: Solonópole was originally called Cachoeira do Riacho do Sangue, after a waterfall in the bed of the Riacho do Sangue.

In the wider region, rain can wash red soil into the Riacho do Sangue, turning part of its flow reddish. The Balneário at Açude Riacho do Sangue, popularly known as Balneário Boqueirão, was listed among Solonópole’s main tourist attractions in 2023. If you include it in your plans, check current visiting conditions in advance.

Expo SolFest takes place every August in the municipality of Solonópole. Its annual recurrence is established by State of Ceará Law No. 19.415, enacted on September 5, 2025. Via Sacra 2025 was performed by local artists at Ginásio Poliesportivo de Solonópole and described as a celebration of local culture, religiosity and community traditions. Thus, the annual August event and the performance described for 2025 differ in their timing.

Nature Attractions in the Wider Destination of Ceará

The wider destination of Ceará also offers nature-related attractions. Parque Nacional de Ubajara protects 6,299 hectares of a transition zone between the Caatinga and the Atlantic Rainforest. Its visitor trails include Trilha da Samambaia and Circuito das Cachoeiras. Gruta de Ubajara is 1,120 meters long, with about 450 meters open to visitors. Visitors must be accompanied throughout the cave tour by a guide accredited by Parque Nacional de Ubajara. These natural attractions offer a distinct perspective on Ceará alongside Solonópole’s religious and cultural history.
