Discover Mulungu through its church and festival history as well as its regional coffee heritage. Two churches provide historical reference points, while the Rota Verde do Café puts cultivation and processing in a broader context. Markets and dining venues add another perspective, with local produce and coffee tastings.

Churches and Festival Traditions

The Igreja de São Sebastião in Mulungu was inaugurated in 1895. Construction of the Igreja Matriz began in 1943. These are two distinct historical reference points: the inauguration of one church and the start of construction of the other. If you are interested in Mulungu’s history, you can view these dates as two clearly separate milestones.

Religious traditions are also part of the local culture. The amateur theatre group Art Sacra performs in Mulungu every year during Holy Week. The Via Sacra de Mulungu has been performed together with the communities of Mulungu for 16 years and helps preserve the traditions of the religious Easter season. If you would like to plan your trip around a performance, check the dates in advance.

Another festival tradition is Quadrilha Pôr-do-Sol from Mulungu. A description from 2025 identifies the group as a participant in the June festival season in the state of Ceará, where it had been working in the arts and culture for 13 years at that time. Thus, the June festival calendar’s cultural activities complement the religious Easter traditions.

Coffee Routes and Cultivation

The Rota Verde do Café includes Guaramiranga, Baturité, Mulungu and Pacoti. The route features ecological trails through coffee plantations and explains the coffee-processing process, from planting to cup. It also highlights shade-grown coffee beans, the proximity of the forest and the absence of agrochemicals as features of regional coffee cultivation. In this way, it brings together landscape, cultivation and processing to offer different perspectives on coffee.

Another historical reference is Sítio São Roque in the municipality of Mulungu. It is considered a link to the beginnings of coffee cultivation and offers insight into the entire production process, from planting to roasting. Its historical significance and insight into processing complement the perspective of the Rota Verde do Café, although they do not cover the same subject: the focus here is on a specific place, while the route passes through four municipalities.

Local Produce and Dining Venues

The Feira Agroecológica de Mulungu showcases produce from local family farms, handicrafts, food and culture. The fair was first held in April 2018; at the time, a weekly Sunday event at the Calçadão on Rua Coronel Justino Café was planned. If you are planning to visit the market, check the current date in advance.

A description from 2022 lists sweets, spices and dairy products at Empório Serrano de Mulungu, sourced directly from producers. It also presents the Empório as a café serving coffee from the Maciço de Baturité, with a barista and coffee tastings. As products and business operations may change, check what is currently available before visiting.

A description from 2022 locates the Santa Demolição bookshop and bistro in a 19th-century warehouse. Another description published in 2022 mentions coffee tastings and a special lunch at Bistrô Santa Demolição. Check current access and offerings before visiting.
