Barroquinha is located within the Área de Proteção Ambiental Delta do Parnaíba and has a coastline about 25 kilometres long, with beaches and coastal landforms. Each coastal community combines scenery, fishing and festivals in its own way.
Coast, Dunes and Views
Bitupitá is the main beach in the municipality of Barroquinha. Its dunes and sunsets attract tourists travelling along the Rota das Emoções. At the Farol de Bitupitá, community members and tourists gather to take in views of the region’s beaches, dunes and forests from above.
You can also watch the sunset at Praia das Curimãs. The area has numerous fish traps. Artisanal fishing is the main economic activity for residents of the beaches of Bitupitá and Curimã. By comparison, Bitupitá is known mainly for its views of dunes and forests, while Curimãs brings together sunsets, fish traps and fishing.
Other Places and Activities
Bica das Curimãs also attracts tourists. In addition to Praia Nova, you can visit Lagoa da Praia Nova. Canoe races are among the activities associated with Praia de Bitupitá. At Praia Nova, a traditional canoe race is held in connection with Holy Saturday. If you plan to travel for it, check in advance whether the event will take place and when it is scheduled for that year.
Festivals and Local History
The Carnival in Barroquinha is centred on Bitupitá beach, where local and regional bands perform a varied repertoire. If the festival is a reason for your trip, check that year’s dates and programme in advance. This will help you plan around the actual event dates.
The Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes festival has been celebrated in Barroquinha for more than a hundred years. After a chapel was completed in Barroquinha, the first religious festival in honour of the Virgin Mary, under the title Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes, was held there. The tradition and its origins offer different points of connection for a visit that also takes local culture into account.
Barra dos Remédios is considered an important tourist attraction and is located 14 kilometres from the seat of the municipality of Barroquinha. It is also considered the place where Barroquinha began. The distance provides a useful reference point if you want to include this connection to the municipality’s history in your plans.
