Aracati’s historic center includes streets and architectural structures dating from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The ensemble covers a strictly protected area of 154,824 m² and contains 275 buildings. In April 2000, IPHAN recognized it as national heritage and placed it under protection. Those who choose Aracati for its history will find not just individual attractions, but a center whose architectural development spans several centuries.

A Historic Ensemble Spanning Several Eras

The size of the protected area makes the historic center as a whole an important part of the destination. Streets and buildings from different centuries stand side by side. Among the protected buildings is the Casa da Câmara Municipal e Cadeia de Aracati. Construction began in 1779; it was placed under protection by IPHAN in April 2000, along with the historic center. The history of the place, therefore, cannot be reduced to a single construction date or monument.

Churches and Their Different Histories

Aracati’s churches bring together different periods of construction, each with its own history. The Igreja de Nosso Senhor do Bonfim was founded around 1774. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Homens Pretos was built in 1775 by the Sociedade dos Homens Pretos. Aracati’s Black population created a place of worship of its own there, because the main church excluded them because of their skin color. This history also makes the church a testament to racial exclusion.

Construction of the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Homens Brancos began in the early years of the 18th century, but it was not completed until the second half of the 19th century. It is Aracati’s cathedral and was placed under protection by IPHAN in April 2000, together with the historic center. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres is another of Aracati’s surviving churches. It was built by the Irmandade de Nossa Senhora dos Homens Pardos Livres; Emperor Dom Pedro II confirmed the brotherhood’s statutes on February 17, 1854. The different dates help distinguish the founding, construction period, completion and subsequent recognition.

Museum and Preserved Traces

The Instituto do Museu Jaguaribano was founded on November 15, 1968, and opened on December 22 of the same year. It has a permanent collection and serves as a research center on the history of Aracati and the Zona Jaguaribana. The founding and opening dates mark two distinct stages in the museum’s history. The collection and research function focus on the history of the place and the wider Zona Jaguaribana.

The Teatro Francisca Clotilde preserves a different kind of historical trace: behind a glass panel, the foundations of another stage from the early 20th century are on display. While the churches and museum convey their histories through buildings, collections and institutions, this detail reveals a surviving part of an earlier stage.

Market, Handicrafts and a Feast Day

Food and handicrafts are sold at the Mercado PĂşblico de Aracati; individual stalls and products may vary. At the Centro de Artesanato de Aracati, visitors can find lacework, coconut-fiber handicrafts, bottles filled with colored sand and fabric dolls. The two places have different focuses: the market brings food and handicrafts together, while the Artesanato center offers a range of specific handcrafted products.

The feast of Nosso Senhor do Bonfim is traditionally celebrated on January 1. If you use this date as a guide when planning your trip, check the program for your travel dates in advance.
