Novo Airão on the Rio Negro is a starting point for nature experiences whose character depends heavily on water levels. About 85 percent of the municipality’s area consists of environmental protection areas. These include destinations in the Jaú and Anavilhanas national parks, which should not be treated as a single park. Planning a trip therefore begins with the question of which natural area you want to visit and whether low or high water shapes the experience you are looking for.

Jaú: Trails, Rock Art, and Water

Parque Nacional do Jaú lies between the municipalities of Novo Airão and Barcelos. It contains designated archaeological sites and rock inscriptions. A water route to petroglyph sites is 31 kilometers long and passes through areas with beaches and islands. The five-kilometer linear Trilha do Pesquisador runs through different vegetation types, including igapó, terra firme forest, and campinarana; it offers opportunities for birdwatching. The 3.5-kilometer circular Trilha do Itaubal offers opportunities to observe native flora and fauna and to swim at Itaubal Waterfall. Trilha do Apuaú passes through terra firme forest.

During the dry season, visitors to Jaú Park can visit beaches, rapids, rock ledges, and petroglyphs. Rapids and smaller waterfalls form along the Rio Carabinani. During high water, however, water excursions through igapó forest are possible. These seasonal differences should not be combined into a single year-round program. For each tour, check current water levels, park rules, and whether a guide or boat is suitable.

Anavilhanas and Novo Airão

For Parque Nacional de Anavilhanas, the municipal tourism website describes the dry season as running from September to February, when white-sand beaches appear in the archipelago. As the Rio Negro’s water level falls, several freshwater beaches also appear near Novo Airão. This timing is a regional guide, not a guarantee for any particular date. During high water, water excursions travel through rivers, channels, paranás, igarapés, and igapós. Choose an activity that suits the actual water level.

Flutuante dos Botos is a place for tourist encounters with pink river dolphins. A visit must respect applicable protection and conduct rules; its mention does not imply permission to touch or feed the animals. In town, Praça do Dinossauro features life-size dinosaur sculptures, a playground, and a dining area. Ecofestival do Peixe-Boi de Novo Airão has been recognized as intangible cultural heritage of the state of Amazonas; to attend, you will need a date confirmed by up-to-date information.

Getting There and Accommodation

The road connection from Manaus follows AM-070 and AM-352. A bus connection between Manaus and Novo Airão is listed as taking approximately four hours; check the current schedule and actual travel time. There is no scheduled public transport from Novo Airão to Parque Nacional do Jaú. Options include tour operators or boats operated by local tourist transport associations. Confirm the specific trip and park authorization before choosing accommodation.

Compare accommodation options by location, conditions, and accessible departure points. A city hotel is not automatically inside a national park, and a boat trip is not included with every accommodation option. Especially when water levels fluctuate, flexible planning and confirmed transport services are more important than a one-size-fits-all day plan.
