Roteiro can be understood through three themes: the coast of Praia do Gunga, the lagoon and its mangrove area, and the view from Mirante Gutemberg Breda. Praia do Gunga is described as one of Alagoas’s most important tourist attractions and is located in the municipality of Roteiro. These specific features give the destination a focus on coast, nature and views.

Coast, Lagoon and Mangroves

Praia do Gunga is an extensive stretch of coastline with white sand and coconut palms. It connects the waters of the Atlantic Ocean with Lagoa de Roteiro.

The Reserva Ecológica de Manguezais da Lagoa do Roteiro includes part of Roteiro and is a protected area in the full-protection category. At the same time, a legal process is underway to reclassify the reserve.

Views of the Coast and Reefs

Mirante Gutemberg Breda is located on AL-101 Sul. From there, you can see the entire stretch of coconut palms at Praia do Gunga, as well as the beaches and reefs of Barra de São Miguel. The distinction from the description of Gunga is specific: sand and palms along the coastline take center stage there, while the Mirante also offers views of the beaches and reefs of Barra de São Miguel.

History and Festivals

The first chapel in Roteiro was built in 1900 in honor of Nossa Senhora do Livramento. The Festa da Padroeira and Roteiro’s celebrations of its political emancipation attract visitors. The Festival do Marisco is one of Roteiro’s most important festivals.

A regional tourism study from 2012 lists September for the Festa da Padroeira and December 18 for the Festa da Emancipação Política; it also records that the Festival do Marisco is held annually. Use this information as a historical guide and check current event dates before traveling.

Resources of Lagoa de Roteiro

Lagoa de Roteiro is rich in sururu, massunim, fish and oysters. These resources give the lagoon a culinary dimension in addition to its scenery. Visitors looking to understand Roteiro beyond its beaches and views will find another locally rooted theme in the lagoon.

Alagoas in a Broader Context

Within the wider destination of Alagoas, filé lace is part of the region’s handicraft tradition. The embroidery is inspired by the making of fishing nets and is also a cultural expression of the Mundaú-Manguaba estuary complex. In Maceió, Pontal da Barra and Riacho Doce are among the largest centers producing filé embroidery. In the Pajuçara neighborhood, the Pavilhão do Artesanato is a handicraft center featuring local lace, embroidery, ceramics, sculptures and other handmade products.

Alagoas’s intangible cultural heritage also includes Caboclinhas, Taieiras, Negras da costa, Baianas and Samba-de-matuto. These forms of expression are inspired by ancient African traditions and myths. In the broader regional context, sururu, a shellfish from the Manguaba and Mundaú lagoons, is also closely associated with Alagoas.
