Piranhas brings together a historic center, colonial architecture and the Rio São Francisco. Those who want to explore the town’s history and landscape together will find a range of points of interest: buildings, cultural history and views of the river. The historic and scenic site of Piranhas was listed by IPHAN in 2004. The protected area includes the historic center, the district of Entremontes and a 13 km stretch of the Rio São Francisco. The protected area therefore encompasses not only built-up areas but also part of the river landscape.
Colonial Heritage and Landmarks
The colonial houses are scattered irregularly across hills and low-lying areas. This distribution is an important part of the townscape: the architectural heritage can be described not only by its style but also by its position across different types of terrain. Two landmarks with distinct characteristics are located in the historic center. The Torre do Relógio is visible from several points in town and shapes the townscape. The Nossa Senhora da Saúde parish church is also in the center and offers an architectural subject for photographs. The Torre stands out through its presence in the townscape, while the church puts a specific architectural feature in the spotlight.
Town History and Cangaço
Visitors to Piranhas’s historic center can learn about the history of the town and Cangaço. The Museu do Sertão, also called the Museu do Cangaço, is located there as well: it is housed in the former railway station. The name Museu do Cangaço clearly signals its subject, while the former station gives the building its own historical connection. For a culture-focused visit, the history of the place, its connection to Cangaço and a former railway station as a distinct local feature come together here.
Views of the Rio São Francisco
At the Mirante Secular, you can enjoy views over Piranhas and the Rio São Francisco. The Orla de Piranhas offers a different focus: there, you can take in the waters of the Velho Chico—another name for the Rio São Francisco—and relax. This distinction is useful when planning your day: the Mirante is about the panorama over the town and river, while the Orla is about enjoying the water and taking a break.
The Rota do Cangaço
The Rota do Cangaço begins in the historic center of Piranhas and includes an optional Cangaço trail to the place where Lampião and his group were surrounded. The route therefore goes beyond a general exploration of Cangaço and leads to a specific, named historic site. The trail is optional; those who include it choose it as an additional part of the route, not as a prerequisite for learning about the town’s history and Cangaço in the historic center.
