Barra Nova offers a variety of coastal scenery and ways to spend your stay, from constant Atlantic waves and calm, clear pools to the visible meeting of different bodies of water. At the beaches of Barra de São Miguel, you can choose from beach amenities, wave activities and distinctive natural features. Boat trips, ecological trails and a cultural highlight round out the options.
Beaches with different highlights
Praia do Meio is in the center of Barra de São Miguel’s waterfront promenade. It has beach stalls and kiosks, as well as easy access. If these facilities and the waterfront location are important to you, Praia do Meio is a clear point of reference when choosing a beach.
Praia do Barra Mar has well-developed leisure facilities, including seaside restaurants, kiosks and shaded areas. At the same time, the meeting of the Rio São Miguel and the sea is the beach’s standout feature. Here, facilities and the confluence of river and sea go hand in hand—a different emphasis from Praia do Meio.
Praia do Surf is known for its consistent waves coming directly from the Atlantic; surfers and bodyboarders use the beach. If you’re interested in these activities, you can make Praia do Surf a specific part of your selection. Porto das Vacas has a different character: it has natural pools formed by coral reefs. The water is calm and clear, and marine life is visible to the naked eye.
At Praia das Conchas, three bodies of water with different origins and compositions meet. They do not mix completely, and each displays a distinctive color that can be seen with the naked eye. The coastal spots therefore stand out for different reasons: waves at Praia do Surf, reef pools at Porto das Vacas, and clearly visible water colors at Praia das Conchas.
Boat trips and walking trails
There are two different options for a trip along the coast. Passeio de Jangada follows the coast of Barra de São Miguel aboard a traditional jangada with local fishermen. Passeio de Lancha Corais is an exclusive speedboat trip along the beaches. The choice between them comes down to their explicitly different features: a traditional jangada with fishermen or an exclusive speedboat ride. Check in advance whether your preferred trip is available on your travel date.
Ecological trails are also part of what Barra de São Miguel offers visitors. This means you can consider hikes as well as coastal and boating activities. Choosing between a trip on the water and a trail on foot puts a different emphasis on your stay.
Capela Sant’Ana and the July festival
In the center of Barra de São Miguel stands Capela Sant’Ana, considered the town’s oldest and most historically significant chapel. It adds a cultural note alongside the beach and water experiences. The festival in honor of Sant’Ana, the patron saint of Barra de São Miguel, takes place from July 17 to 26. Check the current program before your trip if you want to plan around the festival.
Plan your arrival
AL-101 Sul is the main road connection to Barra de São Miguel. Check road conditions and the route before setting off. When planning, it helps to first choose the activities you most want to focus on: waves and boards, pools and visible marine life, a boat trip, ecological trails, or Capela Sant’Ana and the festival. You can then match your travel interests to the town’s different coastal and cultural offerings.
