Teslić lies in the Usora Valley on the road between Doboj and Banja Luka. The river flows through the town; downstream, at Sastavci, it meets the much smaller Mala Usora. The area also offers trails through pine forests, monasteries and churches, and a distinct culinary tradition. For planning purposes, these themes can be considered separately: the river and outdoor activities, cultural history, local cuisine and a specific wellness offering each provide a different focus.
The Usora River and outdoor trails
Within the town, the Usora is also known as the Velika Usora. It runs from its source below the peak of Očauš in the Borja massif to its mouth upstream of Doboj; the river is 82 kilometres long in total. At Sastavci, downstream from Teslić, it joins the Mala Usora, its much smaller left-bank tributary. The place names thus refer to different stretches of the same river: from its source in the mountains, through Teslić, to its mouth.
The Usora is home to Škobalj, Klen, Plotica, Štuka and Bjelica; trout are also found in the upper reaches. Anyone planning to fish should check the applicable rules and seasons in advance. This places the river in a landscape and nature context without implying that these fish species indicate that fishing is currently permitted or available.
Teslić has a 2,500-metre trail through a pine forest for walking, running and cycling. Landscaped parks and walking paths together extend for seven kilometres. There is also a ski slope in Teslić. Those who prefer to follow a marked route can find the “Track around Teslić” GPS track, with a free map available to download. Check that the route and files are available before using them.
Monastic history and a wooden church
The medieval Serbian Orthodox Liplje Monastery lies on the northern side of Mount Borja, 25 kilometres from Teslić. It was first mentioned in the second half of the 15th century. A visit therefore connects a specific place with a long, documented history. Visitors can stay overnight in the monastery’s konak; check availability before travelling.
Another historical highlight is the wooden church in Vrućica, dedicated to the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God. It was reconstructed on the site of an earlier place of worship dating from 1642. Four centuries-old doors from the first church have been preserved; the 370-year-old lock attached to them still works today. The church and monastery offer different ways to explore religious history: one is a reconstructed place of worship with preserved structural elements, the other a medieval monastery.
Cicvara, cheese and wellness
Cicvara is a traditional dish from Teslić. To prepare it, Blatnica cheese and butter are stirred into boiling water; sour cream is sometimes added. The municipality of Teslić also includes geographically protected local cheese products in its tourism offering. The cheese tradition is therefore a distinct part of the regional cuisine, while cicvara gives a concrete example of how cheese is used in a dish.
For those who consider wellness when choosing accommodation, Hotel “Kardial” in Banja Vrućica offers indoor and outdoor pools with thermomineral water, as well as saunas and massages. This specific wellness offering can be taken into account when considering accommodation, without conflating it with the other themes, which focus on walks, the river or history.
