Popovi brings together several tangible traces of local cultural history: historical names from the 16th century, a memorial path with eight marble plaques, and a public bathhouse that opened in 1924. There is also an Orthodox church dating from the early 1990s and traditions such as the horse races held for Poklade. The history of the village is reflected in various forms—from old records to oral traditions.

Historical Traces Across Several Centuries

The earliest mention of Popovi dates back to 1548: an Ottoman tax register names the settlement Zvonaš Selište. A register from 1600 lists Popovi under the name Prokac Bijeljina. These two entries, recorded centuries apart, offer a glimpse of the different historical names of the place. A more recent chapter is marked by the Orthodox Church of the Nativity of Christ, built between 1991 and 1993.

Memorial Sites and Village History

Popovi’s Staza velikana (Path of the Greats) features marble plaques commemorating eight prominent Serbian figures. Another site of historical significance is the public bathhouse: according to local tourism information, it is considered the first public bathhouse in a village in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It opened in 1924. One of the oldest reading rooms in Bosnia and Herzegovina is also located in Popovi. A bust of a prince stands in the village center.

Mulberry Tree and Oral Tradition

The black mulberry tree at the highest point of Popovi is considered the oldest tree in Semberija. An oral tradition tells that Prince Ivo tied his horse to a black mulberry tree in the village center, also at the highest point of the village. This site brings together a traditional story and a regional designation of the tree.

A 2024 report describes a local campaign to protect the tree. Its condition and access may change; check the current situation before visiting.

Traditions and Practical Planning

Horse races are traditionally held in Popovi for Poklade. Check the specific dates before your trip. A 2018 description of the Tanasić Ranch in Popovi mentioned a riding school offering lessons for beginners, as well as opportunities for extreme riding. Check before visiting whether these activities are still available.
