The family beekeeping tradition gives Opetci a distinctive local character; in the surrounding region, the hilly terrain, river canyon and challenging hike to Kličevac offer different travel experiences. For planning purposes, it is useful to distinguish local themes from destinations in the wider area.
Beekeeping and Agriculture
A family beekeeping tradition spanning more than 150 years is associated with Opetci. A beekeeper from the village produces royal jelly and queen bees; his honey has received a total of eight gold medals for its quality. The awards are for the honey, while royal jelly and queen bees are separate products. Another family farming story concerns Asim Bećirović: after her return in 2001, her family farmed in Opetci and produced milk. A 2019 report described this as part of the family’s livelihood.
The Landscape of the Sućeska Region
In the 2016 regional classification, Opetci is one of the settlements in the Sućeska region. The area around Sućeska is hilly and lies away from the main transport routes; the Zeleni Jadar River canyon forms its southern boundary. The hilly terrain describes the area’s general character, while the canyon marks a specific southern boundary.
Kličevac and Access
The remains of the medieval town of Kličevac lie on the right bank of the Zeleni Jadar, not far from the present-day village of Sućeska. Reaching it requires a hike of about eight kilometres round trip through very rugged terrain with hollows and steep slopes; the river must be crossed along the way. The Zeleni Jadar is therefore both a landmark for the ruins and part of the route to reach them. Plan for Kličevac as a challenging hike, not a brief stop. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Drina National Park
In the wider region, Drina National Park covers about 6,300 hectares within the Municipality of Srebrenica. The park is known for the Drina River canyon, viewpoints with unique panoramas and extensive forests where the rare Pančić spruce grows. Unlike the challenging access to Kličevac, the park’s main attractions are its river landscape, viewpoints and forests.
Getting Around in Winter
The municipal emergency plan dated 30 May 2025 lists Opetci on a first-priority road in the Sućeska local community. According to the plan, this road must be maintained in winter and is used to transport students and employees. The area lies away from the main transport routes, while the road at Opetci is classified as a first-priority route—two different geographical levels. Check current road conditions before driving in winter.
