On 1 August 1906, the first Ćiro train reached Vardište. This date gives the railway heritage a specific point of reference; alongside it, the Monastery of the Ascension of the Lord and a memorial chapel with an ossuary shape the cultural focus of Donje Vardište.

Narrow-Gauge Railway: History and Connection

The Višegrad–Vardište narrow-gauge railway was part of the former Eastern Railway, built by Austria-Hungary between 1903 and 1906. The restored line connects to the Šargan Eight in Serbia. On 11 March 2026, old and damaged sleepers were replaced along the Vardište–Višegrad line as part of its tourism-oriented revitalisation. 1 August 1906 marks the arrival of the first train in Vardište; 1903 to 1906 refers to the construction of the Eastern Railway, while the sleeper work was part of the dated revitalisation step in 2026.

Monastery and Religious History

The monastery church was built from 1991 to 1994 and consecrated in 1996. The monastery itself was founded in 2006 by decree of Metropolitan Nikolaj as the first convent in the Metropolitanate of Dabar-Bosnia. The dates therefore refer to two separate steps: the construction and consecration of the church, on the one hand, and the founding of the monastery, on the other. Regular services are held on Sundays and public holidays; check the times locally. Natural remedies are sold in the church shop; confirm their availability before visiting. At the Spasovdan celebration at the monastery on 25 May 2023, observed there as the patron saint’s day (Krsna Slava), the liturgy was followed by the breaking of the Slava bread and a procession around the church.

Memorial Chapel and Ossuary

The memorial chapel in Vardište was built in 1931 and consecrated in 1932; the ossuary is located beneath it. It commemorates 440 Serbian officers, soldiers and volunteers who fell or died of typhus in 1914–1915. The memorial ossuary is a protected cultural asset of Republika Srpska.

Distinct Cultural Focuses

These subjects offer different perspectives: the railway focuses on infrastructure and tourism-oriented revitalisation, while the monastery brings together building history, institutional founding and religious use. The 2023 Spasovdan proceedings are a separate, specific, dated example. The memorial site focuses on a particular group from 1914–1915. You can therefore choose a cultural focus based on technological, religious or commemorative history.

Accommodation and Getting There

AutoCamp River accommodates 22 campers and has a drinking water supply, electricity, Wi-Fi, clean toilets and a large tent area. Confirm the availability of the listed facilities before travelling and check current access conditions. The site is near the Vardište–Kotroman border and 150 metres from the M5 highway between Užice, Višegrad, Trebinje and Dubrovnik. When choosing accommodation, facilities and location are two separate criteria: the camper capacity and facilities describe what is offered, while proximity to the M5 helps with planning your journey.
