Zbilje offers two distinct starting points for planning a trip: a Neolithic site with distinctive ceramic features and the “Visočka cvaja” hiking route, whose marked section passes through the village. The archaeological information offers insight into periods far in the past, while the route provides specific waypoints and an overall distance. This can help you decide whether you are mainly interested in prehistory, hiking or both.
Neolithic Site and Medieval Stećci
The Neolithic site of Zbilje covers a large area on elevated river terraces. Radiocarbon dating indicates that the site was used around 4692–4522 BC, with a probability of 95.4 percent. This period gives the site a specific timeframe and makes it a point of interest for travelers interested in prehistoric settlement.
The ceramic features offer further insight into the site. These include a high proportion of fine ceramics, black and gray surface decoration, and typological links to Lisičić and northeastern Bosnia. The site displays Vinča features, particularly those of the Vinča-Pločnik phase. The ceramic parallels with Obre II are also informative: these developments are associated with the final phase of the Butmir culture. Together, the dating and the ceramics offer various ways to explore the Neolithic site.
The medieval heritage includes necropolises with stećci, known as medieval tombstones. Around 344 of these tombstones have been recorded in necropolises across the municipality of Visoko; Zbilje is one of the places with such a necropolis. The figure refers to the municipality of Visoko, not Zbilje alone. The Neolithic site and the medieval funerary monuments thus represent different historical periods.
Hiking the Visočka cvaja Route
Zbilje is also considered an attractive area for outdoor recreation and walks. A route description published in 2025 takes the marked section of the “Visočka cvaja” through Zbilje and on to Planinarski dom Zbilje. The route is 20 kilometers long and follows the mountain trails of Visoko. The 20 kilometers refer to the entire route, not only the section through Zbilje—a useful distinction when estimating the scope of your hiking plans.
The described route can be followed through specific points: at Acetov most, the route crosses the Fojnica; it then follows a gravel path along the river to the village of Zbilje. This sequence shows how the described section reaches the village. The Visočka cvaja is a specifically named hiking route; walks and outdoor recreation are also highlighted as activities in the area.
Planinarski dom Zbilje
The Planinarski dom Zbilje mountain lodge is in the Zbilje area and marks the end of the route’s marked section. A description from 2025 mentions coffee as well as grilled dishes or cooked meals there. Check whether these options are currently available before your visit. Another description from 2025 mentions swimming at Planinarski dom Zbilje as an option during the summer months. Check before your trip whether swimming will be possible during your stay.
To help you decide, you can consider the different topics separately: the site and necropolis appeal to travelers interested in archaeology and history; the Visočka cvaja offers a described hiking route with a total length of 20 kilometers. Information about Planinarski dom adds a point of reference at the end of the marked section and seasonal opportunities for visitors. Find a holiday apartment as a base for your trip and check in advance which of the activities described suit your plans.
