The main part of Dobrinje lies around the mouth of the Dobrinjski Potok, which flows through the middle of the settlement. At the same time, the Bosna forms a meander between this confluence and Graba, below Crniš. This gives you two different perspectives on Dobrinje when planning your trip: the landscape along the waterways, and the archaeological and sacred heritage of the place and its surroundings.

Waterways and landscape around Dobrinje

The main source of the Dobrinjski Potok is called Pijeska. It lies in Lukama, above the settlement and below Komini. Another watercourse comes from Crniš: it dries up in summer, flows through Dumače and empties into the Bosna. Several smaller streams also rise on the surrounding slopes and dry up in summer. This distinguishes the year-round landmarks described for the Dobrinjski Potok from the explicitly seasonal streams.

Most of Dobrinje’s agricultural land lies on the plain. Together with the Bosna’s meander and the streams that flow down from the slopes, it creates a landscape shaped by more than a single river course. If you are considering Dobrinje as a destination, this contrast between the settlement, the plain and the waterways offers a different perspective from the archaeological sites.

Stećci at the Dobrinjac site

A field survey in 2016 recorded four stećci at the Dobrinjac site: two saddle-roof-shaped stones with pedestals, a chest-shaped stone and a slab. The Dobrinjac necropolis with its stećci lies on the local Dobrinje–Buzići road. The small number of recorded stones includes several clearly distinguishable forms.

A decorated stećak at the Dobrinjac site bears rosettes on its end faces. Other motifs include double spirals and a twisted band on the roof surfaces and edges. Two half-apples are also depicted, one of them partially damaged. If you are interested in the design of the stećci, you will find specific details here about their motifs, arrangement and state of preservation, rather than just a general description of the necropolis.

Bronze Age finds and sacred heritage

Four clay animal figurines were recovered from a red, compacted cultural layer at the Dobrinje archaeological site. Finds from this site are dated approximately to the period from the end of the 11th to the end of the 9th century BC. The four clay figurines are considered the only known examples to date of zoomorphic sculpture from the Late Bronze Age in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Both their approximate date and the particular significance of these figurines are therefore relevant to understanding the site.

Another part of the cultural heritage is the old mosque in Dobrinje. It is part of the Islamic sacred heritage from the Ottoman period in the Visoko area and was built in the typical Bosnian style. Northeast of Dobrinje is the medieval fortified site of Grad, on a small rise on the right side of the Bosna valley, downstream from Visoko. Archaeological investigations there identified foundations of walls, buildings and a tower. These sites represent different aspects of history: sacred architecture in Dobrinje and a fortified site on the Bosna.

The topics described here range from the forms and decorations of the stećci to Bronze Age clay figurines, the old mosque and the archaeological remains of buildings identified at Grad. They also include the landscape, with the Dobrinjski Potok, the streams that dry up seasonally and the Bosna’s meander. You can choose Dobrinje based on whether you are most interested in archaeological heritage, sacred heritage or the combination of settlement and river landscape.
