Nova Bila combines a tangible connection to the river with a complex ecclesiastical and cultural history. The Bila rises on the slopes of Vlašić and flows into the Lašva in Nova Bila. Thus, both its source in the mountains and the confluence give the town a clear connection to the landscape. The parish church, parish house and institution named after fra Mate Nikolić also tell of different chapters in local history. When planning a stay, you can choose between nature and cultural themes rather than viewing Nova Bila through just one lens.

River and cycling trail

A specific reference point for cycling and walking routes is the Staza stare pruge – Old Rail Trail. The cycling and walking trail connects Busovača and Turbe; the Stara Bila–Nova Bila section has been developed. As of June 10, 2026, the section between Nova Bila and Stara Bila was maintained; check its current condition before using it. Two points of reference are important when planning your trip: the connection between Busovača and Turbe and the specifically mentioned section near Nova Bila. This lets you consider the trail either as a section near Nova Bila or as part of the longer route, without confusing information about the local section with details about the entire trail.

Cultural sites in Nova Bila

The JU Hrvatski kulturni centar Nova Bila is one of Travnik’s cultural institutions. The 2018–2022 tourism strategy listed the center as having a concert hall. The Kazalište mladih Korifej Nova Bila is located in the center’s building. The cultural center and youth theater therefore share a building, linking them as cultural attractions without implying a specific events schedule. Check the current access arrangements and program before visiting.

Church and local history

The Parish of the Holy Spirit in Nova Bila was established on August 25, 1974. The parish church was essentially completed in 1977. It was restored after the war, and the new stained-glass windows were created by artist Đuro Seder. During the last war, the church and parish house also served as a hospital. These details mark distinct historical milestones: the establishment of the parish, completion of the church, its later restoration, and its use as a hospital during the war.

Another trace of the area’s medical history is the Franjevačka bolnica dr. fra Mate Nikolića. It was established on December 15, 1992, in the complex of the Pastoral Center in Nova Bila and is named after fra Mate Nikolić. He is considered the first physician to earn a doctorate in the history of healthcare in Bosnia and Herzegovina; he graduated in medicine in Feldesberg in 1807. The name thus refers to a historical figure and a biography connected with the early history of medical education. Together with the use of the parish church and parish house as a hospital, this institution offers another perspective on the town’s medical past.

A historic hike

Hiking is also linked to a specific event in the area’s history. The 4th Memorial Hike “Zvonko Gučanin Tajo” was organized on March 22, 2025, in Pokrajčići by the Hrvatska ekološka planinarska udruga “Sveti duh” Nova Bila. The route began in the Površje area near Pokrajčići and included a moderately difficult ascent to Brdo Križ. These details refer to the 2025 edition; check the date and route again for any future edition.

There are two distinct themes to consider when planning a stay: the river and the cycling and walking trail, or the ecclesiastical, cultural and medical history. You can weigh them as options for a stay in Nova Bila without combining them into a fixed sightseeing itinerary.
