Pliva Waterfall lies in the center of Jajce: the final cascade of the Pliva forms a waterfall about 20 meters high. Together with the Pliva and Vrbas rivers and the historic town center, it gives the city a striking interplay of landscape and history. If you are looking for a destination where nature and culture come together, Jajce offers several different points of interest for your trip.
Waterfall and River Landscape
The historic complex of Jajce lies on the southern slope of a large rocky pyramid between the Pliva and Vrbas rivers. The fortress, city walls, and towers are part of this complex. The waterfall creates its own focal point in the city center, while the rivers form the landscape setting. These distinctive features make Jajce interesting both to travelers interested in historic sites and to those who want to include river landscapes in their trip.
A few kilometers from Jajce lie the Great and Small Pliva Lakes. There are opportunities for fishing, kayaking and canoeing, pedal boating, swimming, cycling, and walking. The range extends from activities on the water to things to do on land. You can prioritize them according to your interests; the lakes add a distinct scenic focus to a visit to the city.
The Historic Town Center and Its Eras
The historic town center is a cultural-historical and natural ensemble comprising 17 individual cultural properties. They date from Late Antiquity to the beginning of the 20th century. The historic urban site of Jajce has been on the UNESCO Tentative List since 2006. The fortress, city walls, and towers reflect one part of the city’s layered history; other evidence reaches further back or offers its own thematic focus.
The fortress served as the fortification of the city of Jajce. Jajce was once a royal capital and the last territorial possession of the Kingdom of Bosnia. In the city walls near Medvjed Tower lies an underground church carved into the rock: the Catacombs of Jajce. Duke Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić had them carved into the rock in the late 14th or early 15th century as the final resting place of the Hrvatinić ducal family. The site thus combines a distinctive architectural feature with the family’s history.
The Mithraeum of Jajce also takes visitors back to a much earlier era: it dates from the 3rd or 4th century AD and is considered the oldest national monument in Jajce. The Franciscan Museum displays the remains of the last Bosnian king, Stjepan Tomašević. Along with the catacombs and the fortress, it offers a different way to explore history than the broad span represented by the 17 cultural properties in the town center.
Museums, Collection, and City Gallery
The Museum of the Second AVNOJ Session was founded in 1953 as the central Yugoslav memorial museum institution. It is conveniently located near the bus station and Jajce Waterfall. The City Gallery is housed in the old Kršlak House next to the city wall, on the way to the fortress. The local ethnographic collection offers another perspective on the region: it presents the customs and traditions of life in the Jajce area.
Pliva Mills and Rafting on the Vrbas
Five kilometers from the center of Jajce, twenty medieval watermills stand on a travertine barrier in the Pliva between Great Pliva Lake and Small Pliva Lake. They provide a distinct cultural-historical point of interest in the area around the lakes. Together with the activities available there, they offer a way to combine an interest in landscape and history without requiring both themes to be experienced in the same place or in the same way.
Since 2007, the Jajce Rafting Club has organized a rafting regatta on the Vrbas. Its route starts in Torlakovac and ends at Jajce Waterfall. As the exact dates may vary, it is advisable to check the event schedule before your trip. This experience differs from the city’s and region’s enduring features: it depends on whether the regatta takes place on your planned travel dates.
