Thermal waters and medieval history give Fojnica two distinctive sides; mountains, forests and water shape the surrounding landscape. The municipality is bounded to the southwest by the high mountain ranges of Vranica and Bitovinja. In Fojnica itself, Reumal offers rehabilitation, relaxation, active holidays and planned sports activities. This specialized facility is modernly equipped; its rehabilitation services are based on radioactive thermal water.

Thermal Waters and History in Fojnica

The town’s history is also closely linked to economic and cultural developments. In medieval Bosnia, Fojnica became an important mining and trading center. The Bosnian rulers also operated a mint there. Mining and coin minting highlight different aspects: they point both to the importance of trade and to the town’s political history.

A visit in 2023 included all three. The monastery’s museum collection and library holdings are registered as movable cultural heritage in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The museum also preserves the Ahdnama of 1463. At the request of Fra Anđelo Zvizdović, Sultan Mehmed II el-Fatih granted the Bosnian Franciscans freedom of movement in Bosnia and permission to work among the population.

Another historical landmark is the Atik Mosque. Built in 1551, it is considered one of the oldest mosques in this part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Above today’s settlement of Fojnica, at the site of Banja, remains of Roman works to capture and protect the thermal spring have been preserved.

Mountain Landscape, Lake and Waterfalls

Nearby, Prokoško jezero lies on Mount Vranica at an elevation of 1,636 meters. The lake is of glacial origin and is 22 kilometers from Fojnica; the route follows a gravel road. The rare endemic Reiser’s Alpine newt (Triturus alpestris reiseri) is found in the lake. As a natural monument, Prokoško jezero is managed under the name “Spomenik prirode Prokoško jezero.” Swimming is possible there in summer.

Another natural attraction is the Kozice waterfalls, ten kilometers north of the town. The waterfalls comprise three cascades, each 10 to 20 meters high. Including the lake and waterfalls in your travel plans gives you a choice of different nature destinations; the distances given do not indicate how long the journey will take.

The Brusnica recreation center near Fojnica offers horseback riding, mountain biking and walks along marked, maintained trails in summer. Seasonal offerings may vary. The center also has a 33-kilometer mountain hiking trail to Prokoško jezero. Its length makes it a distinct hiking option, separate from the walks also offered.

Plan Summer Activities and Accommodation

Around Prokoško jezero, the summer katuns offer sheep’s cheese, kajmak, pita and bread baked under a sač. The culinary offerings are seasonal. Fojničko ljeto is a traditional festival organized by the Municipality of Fojnica for residents and visitors. If the festival is important to your travel plans, check the dates for the year you intend to visit.

On the road from Fojnica to Prokoško jezero, at an elevation of 1,100 meters, there is accommodation located 12 kilometers from Fojnica and 8 kilometers from the lake. It offers opportunities for relaxation and recreation, mountain hiking and walks along forest trails. Check the accommodation’s amenities before your trip. When choosing a place to stay, it helps to consider the main focus of your visit: local history and thermal waters offer a different experience from spending more time at the lake or on nearby trails.
