Ripač brings together tangible archaeological traces and the Una’s river landscape: more than 2,500 piles were discovered at the prehistoric stilt-house settlement, arranged in rectangular groups with narrow passages for boats and waterways in between. There is also a historically documented old town and a travertine-forming waterfall. If you are looking for accommodation in Ripač, you can consider the place through two distinct interests: early settlement and history on the one hand, and the river and waterfall on the other.
Stilt-House Settlement and Other Finds
The prehistoric stilt-house settlement covered almost 3,000 m². Its more than 2,500 discovered piles were arranged in rectangular groups, with narrow passages for boats and waterways in between. The area, grouping and passages offer different perspectives on the same archaeological site: its size shows its scale, the arrangement reveals its internal layout, and the passages reflect its connection to the water. This offers a tangible way in for travellers who want to understand archaeological sites not only by their date, but also by how they are laid out.
The settlement near Ripač is one of five stilt-house settlements identified along the Una and has been investigated. This means the site can be viewed both on its own and within the archaeological context of the Una. Roman building remains and urns have also been found in Ripač, so its archaeological significance extends beyond the stilt-house settlement.
Old Town with Fortifications
Ripač Old Town was first mentioned in historical sources in 1408. It stood on an island in the Una and had a large, three-storey square tower surrounded by a square defensive wall. The recurring square shape of the tower and wall makes the fortification easy to picture as a clearly defined structure, while the three storeys give the tower a distinct height. The year and the architectural form highlight different aspects: 1408 is the historical reference point for the old town, while the island, tower and defensive wall define its setting and built character. Unlike the prehistoric settlement, the old town is characterised by a documented date and a described fortification.
Una Waterfall and Local Cuisine
The Ripač Waterfall is among the Una’s travertine-forming waterfalls, cascades and falls. This adds another dimension to the archaeological history: the Una and its waterfalls.
Sojenica Restaurant is in Ripač on the Una, on the Bihać–Ključ main road in the centre of Ripač. It serves ćevapi and fresh trout. There is parking in front of the restaurant and a children’s playground next to the terrace. If you are using this information to plan your visit, check beforehand whether the restaurant and the listed facilities are currently available.
An April 2024 report mentions lunches in boats beneath the Ripač waterfalls at River Dock. If you are planning to try this, check before your trip whether it is still available.
