Oštrelj combines a distinctive pass landscape with a national cultural monument, hiking trails and a winter sports centre. Deciduous and coniferous forests shape the area between Klekovača and Osječenica. Visitors looking for accommodation here can plan their stay around cultural history, a summit hike or seasonal activities; the winter sports centre’s actual seasonal status is particularly important to check.
Location on a Forested Pass
Oštrelj lies on a pass shaped by deciduous and coniferous forests, between the mountains of Klekovača and Osječenica. The settlement is at an altitude of about 1,040 m. The combination of Mediterranean and continental climatic conditions, together with its elevation, gives Oštrelj the character of a health resort. The M14.2 main road between Bosanski Petrovac and Drvar passes through the settlement. Before travelling, it is worth checking the latest road conditions, as they can change.
Cultural Monument and Local History
Titov voz in Oštrelj has been a national cultural monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina since 2013. Another historical connection to the area is 8 October 1942: Josip Broz Tito and the Supreme Headquarters of the NOV POJ came to Oštrelj from the direction of Mliništa and took up residence there in a small train formation. A Roman milestone in Oštrelj is also among the cultural and historical sights of the area around Bosanski Petrovac.
Hiking and Cycling
The March 2021 route report describes the hike to the summit of Oštrelj as an approximately 3.5 km circular route, an easier route of about 2 km and a more challenging ascent of around 1.2 km with 357 m of elevation gain. The report also describes a marked forest trail to the summit; at one junction, a distinctly steeper marked alternative branches off. As trail conditions and markings can change, check both before setting out.
There are marked hiking trails in Oštrelj; tours and hikes can be organised with experienced members of a mountaineering association. There are also cycling routes in the area around Oštrelj; rides with experienced cyclists can be organised in cooperation with an extreme sports association. Check in advance whether organised tours and rides are available.
Winter Sports Centre and Season
For the winter sports centre, the municipal strategy for 2021–2027 lists a 715 m recreational ski slope and a 630 m sports ski slope. It also mentions a 15 m-high ski jump, a toboggan run, a T-bar lift and a baby lift. Close to the centre, the strategy lists numerous cross-country ski trails, horse-sleigh rides and hiking paths.
The strategy noted that the ski centre had not been fully operational in the preceding years, was under a private concession and was to be restored. Check the seasonal status and activity availability before visiting.
Nature in the Surrounding Area
The Lom primeval forest on Klekovača is 7 km from Oštrelj and has trails for researchers and adventure travellers. For the area around Oštrelj, the municipal strategy for 2021–2027 lists primarily wolves, foxes, bears, capercaillies and hares.
When choosing accommodation, you can first decide what you want to focus on: the summit hike can be assessed using the stated route lengths and elevation gains, while the winter sports centre’s seasonal status is particularly important if you plan to visit.
