The remains of Izačić’s old town lie on a rise at the western edge of the Bihać Valley. Local history and a culture of remembrance meet here with a traditional log-pulling competition; the Plješevica mountain massif above Bihać and Izačić offers woodland, hiking trails and far-reaching views. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Izačić, you can weigh up the reason for your trip, from historical traces and memorial events to an interest in nature.

Old Town Remains and Archaeological Traces

In the second half of the 16th century, Izačić’s old town became part of the Bihać Captaincy. After Izačić came under Ottoman rule in 1592, the old town walls were repaired and a strong garrison made up of four branches of the military was stationed there. The sequence of events runs from its inclusion in the Captaincy to the fortification work and the garrison’s stationing after 1592. Izačić-gradina is also among the archaeological remains in the area around Bihać.

Memorial Room and Culture of Remembrance

The “Izačić” Memorial Room is located beside the border crossing of the same name, on the road towards the centre of Bihać. It contains a private collection assembled over many years by a former employee of the former “Željava” military complex. Guided visits are available for a symbolic fee; arrange your visit in advance.

The event “Izačiću, ponosan mi budi” (Izačić, make me proud) preserves the memory of the defenders of this area and the city of Bihać and honours all the Šehids (martyrs) of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. At the 34th edition, covered in a report in August 2026, the Izačić Local Community was the organiser. The 2026 edition’s programme included reciting a Tevhid for the Šehids at the mosque in Izačić, as well as a visit to the Memorial Room. In the 2018 city programme, the same event was scheduled for 14 August, organised by the Izačić Local Community. Check the event date if you plan your trip around it.

Plješevica and the Štraparijada

The Plješevica mountain massif above Bihać and Izačić offers woodland, hiking trails and far-reaching views of the city and the Krajina. This makes hiking distinct from the history of the old town: the focus here is on the landscape, trails and views. Check local access and route conditions before planning a hike.

The Štraparijada in Izačić is a traditional competition in which workhorses pull logs. The horses compete in light, medium and heavy categories; the heavy logs are pulled individually or in pairs. The three categories and the pulling format are two different aspects of the competition. The format described in 2019 may change in future editions. A 2025 report described the Štraparijada as recurring and listed it as the 23rd edition. Check the date of the relevant edition if the competition is a deciding factor in your trip.
