Bosanski Petrovac combines a long-running literary event with a museum whose collection includes works of art and personal belongings. There are also heritage sites and hiking trails in nearby Oštrelj. To plan your stay, you can first decide whether literature and painting, or history and nature as well, will shape your visit.

Literature and art in town

The traditional “Dani Skendera Kulenovića” has been held in Bosanski Petrovac for more than 20 years. The event includes a public competition for the best literary work in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Literature and a competition for literary works are therefore at the heart of the cultural program.

The event program also includes an art school for children, a literary evening, an exhibition of works created at the art school, and the formal presentation of the “Skender Kulenović” literary award. If you would like to include the event in your stay, check the dates in advance.

At the Jovan Bijelić Museum, visitors can see a gallery featuring Jovan Bijelić’s paintings, as well as a traditional Bosnian room. The Jovan Bijelić collection includes 20 works by the painter and four works by other artists. It also contains personal belongings: a desk, painting supplies, a coffee service and a carpet. The collection thus includes both paintings and items from Bijelić’s personal effects.

The weaving of wool carpets is also part of the local cultural history. The craft was practiced across generations and was part of the lives of the people who lived here in the past. The tradition is at risk. The cultural picture therefore extends beyond literature and painting to include a traditional craft.

Additional cultural sites

In nearby Oštrelj, Titov voz was declared a national cultural monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2013. The site adds a recognized heritage landmark to Bosanski Petrovac’s literary and artistic offerings.

The archaeological site of Crkvina is in Kolunić, within the municipality of Bosanski Petrovac. It comprises the remains of a medieval church and a necropolis with stećci, and is designated a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The church and necropolis represent two distinct aspects of the archaeological site.

The nearby Stari grad Bjelaj (Bilaj) also has distinct historical sections: the southern part is medieval, while the northern part is Ottoman. This division provides a specific point of reference for understanding the site’s history.

Hiking trails and natural features

A 2021 hiking description mentions a circular trail of about 3.5 km near Oštrelj and an easier route to the summit that is about 2 km long. This lets you choose between a loop and the shorter summit route. Check trail conditions locally before setting out.

In Vrtoče, natural features include caves such as Mala jama, Avdijina jama and Gaćina jama. There are also karst dolines, or ponikve. These natural features differ from the specific hiking routes near Oštrelj: here, the focus is on named caves and karst formations.

Getting your bearings in the region

The municipality of Bosanski Petrovac lies at the junction of the Bihać–Sarajevo main road (M-5) and the Bosanska Krupa–Krnjeuša–Bosanski Petrovac–Drvar main road (M-14). The M-14 continues toward Croatia and the Adriatic. These two roads provide a sense of the region, while the cultural and natural attractions are spread across different locations.

When choosing what to see, the main themes can be clearly distinguished: the literary event and museum are in Bosanski Petrovac, historical sites broaden the cultural experience, and the hiking description for Oštrelj offers two route options of different lengths. You can plan your visit around the interests you want to pursue during your stay.
