Salt lakes in the city center, an open-air museum dedicated to a Neolithic pile-dwelling settlement, and a cycling path with information boards about flora and fauna give Tuzla a range of distinct attractions. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on water and relaxation, the city’s history and salt heritage, cultural events, or activities on Ilinčica. These different themes offer a guide to prioritizing sights according to your interests.

Panonska Lakes: Water and Relaxation

The Panonska Lakes are a complex of saltwater lakes with a bathing area and beach in the center of Tuzla. They also serve as a recreation and sports center. If you would like to include water, swimming and sports in your stay, this offers a different focus from the archaeological exhibitions and historic sites. The complex also has a historical connection: at the end of September 2008, Slani slapovi was established there as an open-air inhalation health center.

Archaeology and Salt History

The Archaeological Park dedicated to the Neolithic pile-dwelling settlement is an open-air museum. It presents part of Tuzla’s archaeological and historical past and also explores the earliest salt production in the Neolithic period. At Soni Trg, the remains of the main salt well used during Ottoman rule have been preserved and are open to visitors. The square is a museum and tourist complex; an exhibition there displays finds from the Neolithic period and other historical eras, discovered at sites in and around Tuzla. The focuses differ: the Archaeological Park centers on the pile-dwelling settlement and early salt production, while Soni Trg focuses on the historic salt well and finds from several eras.

Minerals and Fossils at the Pannonica Exhibition

The Pannonica geological exhibition complements the archaeological themes with natural history. It displays around 100 minerals and 120 fossils. A Turalis-turis fossil is characteristic of the area where the Pannonian Sea once lay. Tuzlait is also on display; it is considered the only mineral in the world found in Tuzla’s salt deposits. If you are weighing natural history against settlement and city history, the exhibition offers a clear counterpoint: minerals and fossils are its focus.

Squares, Architecture and Cultural Events

Trg Slobode is the largest square in Bosnia and Herzegovina and is designed for social gatherings and various events. The reconstructed Baroka building, dating from the Austro-Hungarian period, is located in the square. Alongside exhibitions and archaeological finds, the architecture of a public square thus offers a distinct focus for sightseeing.

Kaleidoskop is a four-day arts event in Tuzla featuring young artists from the region and Europe. Its program includes exhibitions, film screenings, live performances, workshops, discussions, concerts, and photography and art events. Check the event dates and program for your travel dates before your trip. Another literary highlight is the “Meša Selimović” Award, presented as part of Cum Grano Salis. It recognizes the best novel published in the previous year in the linguistic region of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro.

Ilinčica: Cycling Path, Picnic Areas and Viewpoints

On Ilinčica, a signposted, four-kilometer educational cycling path features information boards about local flora and fauna. There are also 16 picnic areas and three viewpoints. Bicycles are available to rent at the House of Nature on Ilinčica; check current availability if you plan to rent one. The cycling route, picnic areas and viewpoints offer different ways to shape your visit.
