The marked Boletova staza begins in the town center of Srebrenik and passes medieval Stari grad. Over eight kilometers, this moderately difficult trail connects a starting point in town with a striking historical destination. The fortress stands on a high, steep rock above the Tinja Valley in the area of Gornji Srebrenik. Before setting out, it is advisable to check the condition of the local trail markers.

Hiking and the Fortress

The Boletova staza is a practical way to experience Srebrenik’s landscape and history on one outing: its route passes Stari grad. Its length and difficulty are useful details for planning, but they do not replace checking the markers on site. The fortress itself is defined by its position above the Tinja Valley; it stands on a steep rock in Gornji Srebrenik.

The historical context is also clearly dated. The oldest surviving mention of Stari grad Srebrenik appears in a charter that Bosnian Ban Stjepan II Kotromanić had issued on February 15, 1333. This date also provides the reference point for the Dani Povelje event, which commemorates the city’s first written mention.

Art and Events

The cultural event Srebrenik otvoreni grad umjetnosti, or OGUS for short, has been organized since 1977. It includes an international art colony every year, held in late August and early September. The OGUS Gallery’s collection comprises nearly 1,000 valuable works of art created during previous editions; the number may grow with future editions. OGUS thus offers both a recurring event and a connection to an art collection built up over many years.

Dani Povelje takes place in February. The event was established in 2003 to commemorate Srebrenik’s first written mention in 1333. Those interested in the city’s history can set this specific historical occasion alongside the art colony held later in the year.

Zima u kraljevskom gradu is also among the tourism-oriented events held annually in Srebrenik. The dates and details of individual editions vary. The 2023 edition of Kraljevska desetka included 5- and 10-kilometer races, as well as children’s races in two age groups for children aged 6 to 11. Race routes and age groups may change; check the specific event details if you are planning your trip around it.

Cultural Heritage and Local Insights

The Suljagića-Konak is located in Donja Špionica and is a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is considered a rare, valuable and exceptionally well-preserved example of a rural farmstead. This makes it a different cultural heritage attraction from the fortress: here, the focus is on a traditional rural homestead.

The Stara džamija sa haremom u Špionici can be identified by its architecture. It belongs to the type of mosque with an open porch, a hipped roof and a wooden minaret. These features offer a specific insight into its architectural form, without confusing it with another historic structure.

At Etno dvorište Marojević in Gornji Hrgovi, visitors can see an old hearth, an old mill, an ethnographic room and a museum with numerous antiques and objects. Traditional dishes are also available to try, including food cooked under a sač, Čorbanac, fish and fish soup. The displays and food offerings may change; check in advance what will be available during your visit.

Event Dates for Trip Planning

The events mentioned offer different points of reference when choosing when to travel: Dani Povelje takes place in February, and the OGUS art colony is held in late August and early September. Zima u kraljevskom gradu is held annually, though the dates of individual editions vary. If a particular event is central to your trip, check the specific dates before making plans.
