In Gradačac, a fortified historic complex and a lake near the city center come together. Stari grad brings several buildings and uses together within its walls; the history of Lake Hazna, by contrast, leads back to the floods that preceded its creation. The area is also home to collection items from widely separated periods, recurring cultural events, and a local dish that has been prepared and served in Gradačac for more than 40 years.

Stari grad and its towers

The Stari grad complex was built in 1756 on the site of the gradačačka palanka and is a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It includes defensive walls and an upper and lower town. In the upper town stands the tower of Husein-kapetan Gradaščević, also known as Bijela kula. It is a landmark of Gradačac; its čardak offers 360-degree views of the surrounding area. The lower town includes the clock tower, the city library, the museum, the radio station, and the gymnasium. This makes it easy to distinguish the clock tower from the tower of Husein-kapetan: the clock tower was built by Husein-kapetan Gradaščević in 1824.

Another historic landmark is the Gradaščević family house. Osman Gradaščević had it built in 1786; in November 2015, it was declared a national monument. The dates 1756, 1786, and 1824 therefore refer to different buildings: Stari grad, the family house, and the clock tower. They do not mark a single phase of construction, but help distinguish the places mentioned by date.

Collection, culture, and local cuisine

The Zavičajna Museum Collection spans the period from the Paleolithic to the end of the Ottoman era. Its artifacts were found in the Gradačac municipality and in Bosanska Posavina. Two approximate dates give a sense of this broad time span: the collection includes Stone Age artifacts about 100,000 years old, as well as Neolithic finds from around 7,000 years ago. These include artifacts from the Starčevo and Vinča cultures. The collection thus offers different points of reference for the region's history, rather than representing just a single period.

The “Gradačački književni susreti” are held regularly at the “Ahmed Muradbegović” Cultural Center. The center also hosts cultural entertainment events during the “Sajam šljive.” Gradačačka kutija is a distinctive feature of the local cuisine: this meat and vegetable dish has been prepared and served in Gradačac for more than 40 years. The restaurant in the tower of Husein-kapetan Gradaščević is also part of the local dining scene, serving Bosnian dishes and grilled food.

Lake Hazna and outdoor activities

Lake Hazna is very close to the city center. It was created in 1967, after the Hazna River and Lake Vidara flooded Gradačac in 1964 and 1967. Its creation is therefore closely linked to specific events in the city's history. At the same time, the lake offers a different kind of experience from the historic buildings: it is suitable for walking, camping, grilling, relaxing, and fishing.

Anyone interested in Gradačac will find several distinct themes here: the parts of Stari grad and their different dates, the museum collection spanning a broad period, the cultural program, local dishes, and Lake Hazna and its recreational activities.
