Međugorje is situated in a Herzegovinian karst landscape. For many travellers, religious sites shape their visit; a museum and wine tasting offer additional points of interest. St. James Parish Church is at the heart of sacramental and religious life for parishioners and pilgrims. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first consider which of these aspects of the town matters most to you during your stay.

The historical details and present-day religious functions tell different parts of the town’s story.

St. James Parish Church and Prayer Area

Construction of St. James Parish Church lasted from 1934 until its consecration on January 19, 1969. Today, it is the heart and centre of sacramental and religious life for parishioners and pilgrims. Both its long construction history and its present-day religious significance are therefore part of the picture of the town.

The pilgrimage site also includes the outdoor altar, built in 1989. The surrounding prayer area offers around 5,000 seats. The church and outdoor altar are two distinct points of reference when exploring Međugorje’s religious significance: the church represents parish life and pilgrimage, while the outdoor altar provides a large space for prayer.

Cross Mountain, Apparition Hill and Blue Cross

Cross Mountain is a 520-metre-high mountain above Međugorje. On March 15, 1934, parishioners erected an 8.56-metre-high concrete cross there. The Stations of the Cross on Cross Mountain are also marked by bronze reliefs installed in 1988. The mountain’s height, cross and reliefs each give the site its own historical and religious significance.

Since 1989, bronze reliefs along the ascent on Apparition Hill have marked the Joyful and Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary. The Blue Cross is located at the foot of Apparition Hill and was erected there in 1985. These features help distinguish the three named sites: Cross Mountain is the mountain above the town, the path up Apparition Hill features reliefs depicting the Mysteries of the Rosary, and the Blue Cross lies at the foot of the hill. The steep path leading from the houses to the site of the apparitions offers another point of reference.

Museum and Cultural Insights

Muzej Naša Majka presents Brotnjo and the history of Brotnjo and Međugorje using digital technology, holograms and video projections. This makes the history of the area a focus alongside its religious landmarks. Since April 2022, the museum has also served as a cultural and artistic centre.

The sculpture Ruke by academic artist Josip Ivešić stands in the square in front of the museum. It complements the multimedia presentation with a tangible work of art in the museum square. If you are planning your trip around particular themes, the museum offers a different perspective from the church and the sites on the mountain: it explores Brotnjo and the history of Brotnjo and Međugorje through digital presentations and an outdoor sculpture.

Wine Tasting and Finding Accommodation

Vinarija Dodig is located at the Međugorje Sport Center. The wines available for tasting there include Žilavka, Žilavka selekcija, Blatina, Trnjak, Blatina Riserva, Oranž, Rose, Bordo kupaža, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Plavac. You should confirm the availability of a tasting before your trip. This keeps it clearly distinct as a possible activity from the religious and cultural themes.

When looking for hotels in Međugorje, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: religious sites, history and art, or perhaps a wine tasting. Then compare the specific accommodation options based on their descriptions and addresses, and check current availability. Local points of interest can guide your search; choosing where to stay remains a separate decision.
