In Konjic, striking architecture meets museums that reveal different aspects of the city’s history. The Old Bridge represents Ottoman architecture; Tito’s Bunker offers a very different perspective on more recent history. The city is also known for its woodcarving and activities on the Neretva and Rakitnica rivers. You can shape your stay around cultural discoveries, a guided tour or time outdoors.

Old Bridge, Mosque and City Museum

The Old Bridge in Konjic is a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina and is considered an outstanding example of Ottoman architecture in the Balkans. Ali-aga Hasečić originally had it built in 1682 as a pious endowment. The Tekijska–Mehmed-Čauševa Mosque is also a national monument: it is in the inner city area on the left bank of the Neretva, about 150 metres upstream from the bridge. It is the only domed mosque in Konjic and is considered the city’s most architecturally significant mosque.

The Konjic Heritage Museum is in the historic city centre on the left bank of the Neretva, next to the Old Bridge. It preserves and presents the city’s cultural and historical heritage and serves as a venue for cultural events, presentations, exhibitions and other activities; specific events may vary. In the birthplace of Zuko Džumhur, you can see authentic furniture made by Konjic woodcarvers and decorated with traditional motifs. Together, the bridge, mosque and museum offer different ways to explore architecture and the city’s history.

Woodcarving and Tito’s Bunker

Konjic woodcarving is a craft with a tradition spanning more than a hundred years and forms part of the local community’s culture. In 2017, it was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Woodcarving Museum is dedicated to preserving and promoting this craft. Its renewed exhibition offers insights into its history, its master craftspeople and how skills have been passed down through generations of families, as well as its development into a contemporary creative expression. A small demonstration workshop complements the exhibition.

Tito’s Bunker, also known as ARK D-0, is in Konjic and is used as a museum for tourism purposes. The facility was built between 1953 and 1979 under complete secrecy. Allow 90 minutes for a guided tour; visitor arrangements include organised transport and expert accompaniment. Check access information before your visit and confirm booking arrangements.

Activities on the River and at the Rock Face

A rafting route on the Neretva runs from Glavatičevo to Konjic. It is about 23 kilometres long and takes approximately five hours; the actual duration may vary depending on conditions. The experiences described include rapids, secluded beaches and a stop at a waterfall. Stops may depend on the provider and conditions. Canyoning in the Rakitnica Canyon near Konjic combines swimming, diving, climbing, walking and jumps into the water. The rafting route and approximate duration help you distinguish this river activity from a canyoning experience involving a range of movement-based activities.

Another option is the via ferrata and climbing activity at Visit Konjic Outdoor Resort, Mladeškovići 4, Konjic. A steel cable runs along the climbing route on an artificial rock face, which is 12.5 metres high. All equipment is provided, and no previous climbing experience is required. The mountains around Konjic also have marked trails, mountain lodges and houses, as well as organised hiking tours. The right option for your stay depends on whether you are looking for a guided tour, a river experience or an activity on the rock face.

Trails and Places to Visit Nearby

The Vrtaljica Trail begins about a five-minute walk from the centre of Konjic and leads into a protected dolomite botanical reserve. Field research has recorded 360 plant species there. Before visiting, check current information about how the reserve is managed and trail conditions. If you would rather explore other places by the water, Lake Boračko is about 20 kilometres from Konjic: it can be reached by a paved road and offers opportunities for swimming, relaxation, recreation and fishing.
