In Brčko District, architectural history, river activities and regional cuisine can be combined as distinct elements of a trip. The Sava connects the district with the Danube. Brčko offers several historical highlights; other points of interest take you to Brezovo Polje, Bijela, Sandići, Popovo Polje and Bukvik. For planning, it helps to decide what matters most: would you like to discover protected architecture, spend time by the river, or include local food and wine?

Architecture and history

Brčko City Hall was built between 1890 and 1892 and is a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It opened to all visitors in 2013; check current visitor access before your trip. The Gradaščević Tower is also a National Monument. It stands in Bijela, on the slopes of the Majevica mountains, and is a residential and defensive building from the Ottoman period: its historical function combined living quarters and defence.

Protected architecture in Brčko includes the Savska or Atik Mosque and the Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus; both are protected architectural ensembles. The same applies to the Azizija Mosque and its harem in Brezovo Polje. The Kočić House adds another historic building to the selection. In the Kolobara settlement in Brčko, Islahijet is located near the confluence of the Brka and the Sava. The building complex dates from the Austro-Hungarian period.

The Brčko City Museum has a permanent exhibition, “The Archaeological and Ethnographic Past of Brčko and Its Surroundings.” A 2016 description notes that the Muzej Neolit in Sandići has an extensive archaeological and ethnographic collection. Contact the museum in advance to find out what is currently on display and whether visits are possible. The two institutions share a focus on archaeology and ethnography, but differ in format: a permanent exhibition in Brčko and an extensive collection in Sandići.

The Sava, events and walking trails

Ficibajer is a recreational area on the Sava in Kolobara, with a landscaped riverbank. Kayaking and canoeing are possible there, and the Sava Regatta takes place during the summer months. If you would like to plan your trip around the regatta, check the dates separately. The “Zaveslaj Brčko” Canoe and Kayak Club also caters to recreational paddlers and tourists who want to paddle on the Sava. Check in advance what options are currently available.

Brčko’s promenade hosts concerts, cultural and entertainment events, fairs and exhibitions. Specific events depend on the date; check the schedule if a particular event is important to your travel plans. If you prefer walking, there are circular trails of 4.5 and 14 kilometres near the mountain lodge of the Platani mountaineering club. The different trail lengths offer two options for how much time to set aside; check current trail conditions before setting out.

Rural tourism, wine and regional cuisine

The six-hectare Milijada rural estate in Popovo Polje was established in 2022. Its offerings include fishponds, domestic animals, walking paths, a swimming pool and dining options. Check which services are currently available before you arrive. The estate serves “drunken carp” and other dishes made with regional ingredients. As menus can change, it is best to check in advance whether the dish will be available during your visit.

Pajić Winery in Bukvik welcomes visitors for wine and food in a natural setting; arrange your visit in advance. Its vineyards were first planted in 2013, covering 1.5 hectares with Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Chardonnay.

Choose the right hotel for your trip

The destinations mentioned are spread across several places in the district. You can choose where to stay based on what you want to focus on—city history, river activities, or trips to a rural estate and winery.
