Khulna Division appeals to travelers with different interests: Bagerhat is known for historic mosque architecture, the Sundarbans for their mangrove landscape, and Meherpur for its history of indigo and remembrance. When choosing the region, you can first decide whether architectural and cultural history, natural landscapes, or the history of 1971 is the deciding factor. This also provides a useful starting point for searching for hotels in Khulna Division.

Bagerhat: Mosque City and Monument Zones

The historic Mosque City of Bagerhat was founded in the 15th century by the Turkish general Ulugh Khan Jahan. Preserved features include mosques, houses, streets, ancient ponds, tombs and a chillakhana. Shait-Gumbad is one of the largest mosques and the only example of its kind in all of Bengal.

Within the broader destination of Bangladesh, the historic Mosque City of Bagerhat comprises 360 mosques. Its monuments are arranged in two main zones, 6.5 kilometers apart. This makes it possible to distinguish a single architectural landmark from the spatial layout of the larger monument complex.

Sundarbans: Delta and Mangroves

Khulna Division also includes part of the Sundarbans. Its mangrove forests lie in the delta of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers, on the Bay of Bengal. Tidal waterways, mudflats and small salt-tolerant mangrove islands define this natural landscape. Unlike Bagerhat’s historic structures, the Sundarbans offer a landscape-focused experience shaped by the delta and the tides.

Within the broader destination of Bangladesh, the Sundarbans Reserved Forest is the world’s largest continuous mangrove forest. It is exceptionally biodiverse across terrestrial, aquatic and marine habitats. Its southern part contains three wildlife sanctuaries covering a total of 139,700 hectares; these are considered key breeding grounds for several endangered species.

Meherpur: Indigo Trade and Remembrance

Amjhupi Nilkuthi is a historic landmark and indigo factory in Meherpur District. The building is estimated to have been constructed between 1800 and 1815, during the heyday of the East India Company’s indigo trade. On May 13, 1978, Amjhupi Nilkuthi was declared a tourist site during a meeting of the Khulna Division. The estimated construction period and its later designation as a tourist site thus mark two distinct chapters in its history.

The Mujibnagar Smriti Saudha commemorates the oath of office taken on April 17, 1971, in the village of Baidyanathtala in Meherpur District, by the government-in-exile of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. Designed by Tanveer Naquib, the monument was built on 23 triangular concrete pillars; its design is intended to represent a rising sun. Between 1996 and 2001, the complex was expanded to include a library, a mosque and a guesthouse, and covers 20.10 acres of land.

Which Focus Suits Your Trip?

The differences also lie in the nature of the heritage: Bagerhat’s individual mosques sit within a monument area divided into distinct zones, while the Sundarbans are described as an expansive natural landscape. Amjhupi combines an estimated construction period with the history of the indigo trade; the Mujibnagar Smriti Saudha centers on a precisely dated historical oath of office. If you are looking for hotels in Khulna Division, you can first choose your destination based on the theme that matters most to you on your trip.
