Dhaka brings together striking architecture and places that reveal different chapters of Bangladesh’s history. The Bangladesh National Parliament Building, the unfinished Lalbagh Fort and museums with collections on the country’s history each offer a distinct perspective. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether to focus on Dhaka itself or also include places in the wider Dhaka destination.
Architecture and History in Dhaka
The Bangladesh National Parliament Building is a monumental architectural work by Louis I. Kahn. The complex covers about 215 acres; this figure describes the entire complex and gives an idea of its scale.
Lalbagh Fort, also called Fort Aurangabad, is an unfinished Mughal fort complex from the 17th century. It lies on the Buriganga River in southwest Dhaka. Its architectural form, Mughal-era history and unfinished state offer a useful starting point for exploring its architecture and history. The fort can be reached from Gulistan, Shahbagh or Curzon Hall by cycle rickshaw, CNG vehicle or taxi. As local transport conditions may change, check them before travelling.
Curzon Hall also combines architectural history with present-day institutional use: the building dates from the British Raj and houses the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Dhaka. Together with the Parliament Building and Lalbagh Fort, it offers a selection of different architectural and historical themes, without requiring them to be combined into a fixed route.
Museums and Cultural Memory
Ahsan Manzil was the official residential palace and office of the Nawab of Dhaka. A new museum of the Bangladesh National Museum was established there by collecting and displaying objects in galleries. It became a branch of the museum with its full management authority. The palace’s former function and its use as a museum offer two different perspectives on the same place.
The Liberation War Museum in Agargaon contains a rare collection of objects, artefacts and documents from 1971. Its new premises opened on 16 April 2017 and had 3,500 square metres of gallery space. The date refers to the opening of the new premises; it provides context for the museum’s development without indicating current visiting conditions.
Pahela Baishakh is celebrated throughout Bangladesh. In Dhaka, the celebration takes place in the TSC area of the University of Dhaka. This offers a different kind of cultural experience from visiting a historic building or museum exhibition: it is an annual celebration held in the university area.
Cultural and Natural Sites in the Wider Dhaka Destination
Beyond the city of Dhaka, the Dhaka destination also offers a variety of cultural and nature experiences. Panam City, an archaeological site, is located in Sonargaon Upazila in Narayanganj District. The Folk Art and Craft Museum is also in Sonargaon. Its two exhibition galleries showcase depictions of everyday life in Bangladesh. The two places therefore have different focuses: archaeological heritage on the one hand and everyday life in the museum galleries on the other.
Other historic sites are in different districts. Baliati Zamindar Bari is in the village of Baliati, in Saturia Upazila of Manikganj District. It is considered one of the finest examples in Bangladesh of a 19th-century monument in the Renaissance Colonial style. Atia Mosque is in Delduar Upazila of Tangail District and dates from the 17th century. Terracotta features on its eastern and northern exterior walls.
Nature experiences include the forest area of Sreepur in Gazipur and Arial Beel in Munshiganj District. Sreepur is a major tourist attraction with a variety of trees, shrubs, climbers and other vegetation, as well as animal and bird species. Arial Beel covers 136 square kilometres and can be explored by boat in Srinagar Upazila. If you are planning a boat trip, check in advance whether it is possible during your visit. In Bhawal forest, visitors can take a boat around a lake; here too, it is advisable to check current local conditions.
Choose Accommodation Based on Your Plans
Base your search on the places you actually plan to visit, and check the location of a specific accommodation and the routes to each place separately. This keeps the city’s sights and the regional excursion destinations as distinct planning priorities.
