Weiler lies at the eastern edge of the Vorarlberg Rhine Valley, at the foot of the Freschenstock. The landscape and ecclesiastical history give the village a variety of facets: the Hahnenberg fen, forests and gorge formations shape its natural features, while the parish church and religious traditions represent its cultural side. You can see which of these might be of particular interest to you on your trip by visiting the specific places and discovering what makes each one distinctive.
Fen, forests and gorges
The Hahnenberg fen lies southeast of the village center in a flat hollow on a gently north-facing slope between Hahnenberg and HĂĽndler. Its elongated litter meadow is around 30 to 40 meters wide and follows a meltwater channel. A biotope report dated June 18, 2020, describes purple moor grass and fragrant leek in the drier areas. The highly endangered Siberian iris now occurs there only as isolated specimens. The species composition may change.
The other landscapes also differ considerably from one another. The Ratzbach gallery forest is a remnant of floodplain forest at the southern end of the Weiler meadows, around one kilometer southeast of the village center. Above the village, the Klausbach gorge is cut into soft ground, with a gorge forest alongside the stream. The Ratzbach kettle gorge, meanwhile, is a deeply incised ravine with a remarkable waterfall.
The Weiler-Halden-Fraxern deciduous mixed forests include hillside forests north of the L 69 state road, the Fraxner StraĂźe, as well as areas around the Altmontfort ruins and at RĂĽthischrofen in Weiler-Halden. The forest continues into Fraxern. These described forest landscapes therefore extend beyond Weiler, and they do not all share the same character: they include hillside forests, a streamside gorge forest and a remnant of floodplain forest.
Hiking trail and fitness course
Pfaffenkeller is a gorge-like narrow passage in the deciduous mixed forest of Loresch. It lies along the marked hiking trail and forest nature trail from Weiler to Röthis. Since you can check the current signposting on site, it is advisable to look for the trail markers before following the route.
The Ganta fitness course runs for around two kilometers through the forest in the direction of Viktorsberg. It is located in the Ganta-Loresch forest landscape within the municipalities of Weiler and Röthis and has 13 stations for strength, endurance and coordination. The paths are not suitable for strollers, and conditions may change. So check the latest information on site. The details about the route and training areas help distinguish this course from the hiking trails and the landscape sites described above.
Parish church and religious tradition
Weiler Parish Church was rebuilt in 1875–1876 to plans by Viennese cathedral architect Friedrich von Schmidt and consecrated in 1876. Schmidt also designed the side altars, which Kob carved between 1880 and 1882. The building history thus provides a specific timeline: the new building and its consecration were followed a few years later by the completion of the side altars.
Since 1876, the Weiler church choir has been dedicated to classical and contemporary church music. The parish offers a varied program based on the church year and holds benefit concerts to raise donations for people in need; individual events may vary. Another religious tradition dates back to the 17th century: as early as then, people from Vorarlberg and nearby Switzerland set out for Ebnit on July 22 to pray.
