Buch in Vorarlberg lies between Schneiderkopf and the Bregenzerach Gorge. A small practice ski lift, panoramic hiking and a church on the hill offer different reasons to visit, depending on the season. A holiday apartment in the village is not necessarily next to the lift or the start of a hiking trail.

Winter and hiking at Schneiderkopf

The small Schneiderkopf ski area is right by Buch. Beginners can practise their first turns on skis and snowboards at the Heimen practice lift. Lift operations, snow conditions, lessons and opening hours should be checked for your travel date. Below the 971-metre summit is a mountain cross with views of the Bregenzerwald mountains. A panoramic hiking route leads from Buch over Schneiderkopf to Bildstein. It is a destination in its own right in summer or autumn, not a promise of a cleared winter trail. A new mountain cross is 3.55 metres high; the wood from the former cross was used to make a place to sit along the path above the Tobel hamlet.

Forest, conservation and local history

Ippachwald is one of the largest continuous forest areas in northern Vorarlberg. The Bregenzerach Gorge Natura 2000 site extends into Buch. Endangered plants such as the lady’s slipper orchid grow there, and the rare caraway-leaved moonwort is found around Schneiderkopf. Stay on permitted paths and do not damage any plants. The parish church stands at an altitude of 725 metres on a hill in the village centre. A chapel was consecrated at this site in 1484; a church was built in 1794. Visits should be arranged with consideration for religious services.

Accommodation by season

For a beginner’s ski day, the location in relation to the actual lift entrance is important; for hikes, it is the chosen starting point. Compare a specific offer by address, price and amenities. The Bregenz region can help put things in perspective, but does not replace checking local access routes.
