Nüziders combines a long ecclesiastical history with buildings from different periods and opportunities for outdoor activities. St. Viner Church and the parish church represent different historical points of reference. Other highlights include Villa Dressel, a chapel in Laz, a surviving castle ruin and the Hangender Stein biotope. Those looking to combine culture with nature or sporting activities can take these themes into account when choosing where to stay.

Church history in Nüziders

St. Viner Church is one of the oldest churches in Vorarlberg and an outstanding architectural monument in Nüziders. The first church building dates back to the 9th or 10th century. This makes the church a notable point of reference for anyone interested in early architectural history.

A parish church in Nüziders was first mentioned in 881. The present-day parish church was built largely in the 1820s and stands on older foundations dating back at least to the Gothic period. The year 881 and the construction period of the present building offer different chronological reference points for the history of the town.

Buildings and local history

Built in 1904, Villa Dressel combines Heimatstil and Art Nouveau. It is also a visible expression of Nüziders’ industrial Gründerzeit around 1900. Its construction date and blend of styles make it a specific example of architecture from this period.

The former Schwarzer Adler inn is one of the few buildings in Nüziders to have survived the village fire of 1865; it is a listed building. A Baroque chapel with a small bell tower was built in Laz in 1672. Schloss Sonnenberg is another historic site: it was not rebuilt, and parts of the ruin have survived to this day. Together, these buildings show different facets of local and architectural history, from a specific year in the past to a surviving ruin.

Biotope and circular trails

The Hangender Stein Nüziders biotope covers 13.7 hectares. It provides a distinct natural highlight alongside the churches and historic buildings, adding a landscape dimension to the area’s cultural history.

There are different features to consider when choosing a route: the Bludenz–Nüziders Panorama Trail is an easy walk or hike and takes 1 hour and 45 minutes. Alpine Art Muttersberg is a circular trail above Nüziders and Bludenz. Eight artists have created works along the trail. The duration of the Panorama Trail helps with planning how much time to allow; Alpine Art Muttersberg is defined by its circular route and the artworks along the way.

Summer sports facilities

In summer, the skate spot in Nüziders serves as a skate park. Its features include a quarter pipe, a pyramid or small fun box, a slide rail and an ollie box. These features give a clear idea of the facilities; the seasonal opening period is important for planning.

The beach volleyball court can be used for beach volleyball matches and beach soccer games. If you plan to use one of the sports facilities specifically, check the latest information on use before your visit. This makes it possible to tailor your stay to your interests: churches and architectural history, a route with a stated duration or artworks along the way, nature or summer activities.
