The Tschengla high plateau lies in Bürserberg at an altitude of 1,250 metres. It is home to Neolithic stone circles with a history spanning thousands of years. Four information panels at the stone circles provide an overview map and further information about their history and significance. This allows visitors to view the site while learning about its historical background.

Walser Culture and Local History

The Paarhof Buacher local history museum offers insight into the former lives and work of mountain farmers. It also brings the Walser people’s distinctive architecture and culture to life. The Paarhof Buacher farmstead – local history museum is protected as a historic monument by decree; the list of the Federal Monuments Authority dated 19 June 2026 includes it accordingly. The museum and building thus offer insights into life in the past and the architectural heritage passed down through generations.

The parish church of St Joseph also tells the story of the village: in 1736, after Bürserberg separated from Bürs, it was elevated to the status of Bürserberg’s parish church. It has retained its Baroque character to this day. Its onion dome, visible from far away, gives it a distinctive appearance in the alpine mountain landscape. Bürserberg therefore offers different ways to explore its history: rural life and Walser culture at the museum, and the development of the parish church.

Trails Through History and Landscape

The “Traces of History” cultural trail starts at the “Bürserberg Museum” bus stop. If you plan to include this starting point in your journey, check the timetables separately. The named starting point makes it easier to include the trail in your plans without assuming a particular way of getting there.

For a hike to the Tschengla, the “Schesamurbruch-Tschengla” route leads from Bürserberg to the high plateau and offers views of the mighty Schesamurbruch. It is Europe’s largest mudslide. The trail to Ausserberg Waterfall has a different character: it is classified as easy, family-friendly and suitable for pushchairs. These descriptions highlight two different features—the climb to the plateau with views of the mudslide, and the waterfall trail with its stated classification.

Activities and Seasonal Conditions

There are also specific points of reference for other activities. The Löcher toboggan run in Bürserberg is classified as a moderately difficult run. At the Brandnertal Bikepark, you can start from the Tschengla in Bürserberg. From there, the Loischkopfbahn takes you to the Loischkopf, the bike park’s highest point; the lift operates seasonally.

A guided snowshoe taster tour is planned on the Tschengla high plateau for the period from 21 December 2026 to 22 March 2027. Participation depends on sufficient snow cover. The tour teaches the correct technique, and suitable equipment is available on site. Another winter option is the Burtscha Tour, a short, signposted introductory ski tour from the Tschengla to the Burtschasattel.

The Alpe Rona show dairy offers a seasonal experience focused on cheesemaking: you can watch the dairy farmer making cheese. As it operates seasonally, it is worth planning your visit accordingly.
