Castle history, a recurring cultural program and two walking routes with different itineraries give you concrete reasons to stay in Almegg. Important for planning: Almegg Castle itself is strictly private; areas separate from the castle are opened for cultural events. The Martinimarkt also provides a specific date in November.

Castle History and Culture

In 1626, Almegg Castle served as a refuge for members of the nobility and Upper Austrian farmers who opposed the Bavarian occupying troops commanded by Count Herberstorff. General Löbel and his soldiers plundered the castle and set it on fire. As of June 23, 2026, Almegg Castle is listed as a protected monument under Section 3 of Austrian monument protection law.

The Almegg Castle Cultural Forum organizes several exhibitions, concerts, talks and other cultural events every year. Almegg’s cultural society was expanded into the Almegg Castle Cultural Forum in 1979, bringing neighboring villages into the organization.

Martinimarkt in November

The traditional Martinimarkt takes place in early November and is well known throughout the country. More than 100 artisans present their work there. The 44th edition is scheduled for November 7 and 8, 2026. Unlike the Cultural Forum’s varied program, the market is a clearly defined seasonal reason to visit.

Two Walking Routes with Different Itineraries

The “From Water to Cider” walking route leads from the market square toward Almegg in Steinerkirchen as far as the Alm bridge, then follows the Alm through the nature reserve to the Penninger footbridge. The route as described follows a sequence from the market square, across the bridge and along the river to this destination.

The “Over the Castle” circular route follows forest paths and stretches of road, offering views and glimpses of the Alm-Auen nature reserve. A detour to the Agrarium landscape park and Almegg Castle is possible. Choose according to the route you prefer: following the Alm to the Penninger footbridge, or taking a circular route with a possible detour to the park and castle. As route conditions may change, check the route information before your visit.

Nature Reserve and Getting Your Bearings

The municipality of Steinerkirchen an der Traun includes part of the 100-hectare Alm-Auen nature reserve. It aims to protect a valuable mosaic of vegetation made up of overgrown gravel areas, dry islands and Alpine flora washed downstream. This information about the nature reserve refers to the municipality; the “From Water to Cider” walking route passes through the protected area.

The Time Out family and leisure park is located at Almegg 10, 4652 Steinerkirchen an der Traun. An alternative route there via Edt bei Lambach, the Traun bridge and Hafeld toward Almegg is possible. If a particular exhibition, concert or talk is the deciding factor for your trip, check its date before planning your overnight stay.
