Visitors choosing Tiefgraben as a destination can focus on architectural history, hiking destinations on Mondseeberg, cycling and swimming at Irrsee. The Mondseer Rauchhaus open-air museum showcases a Mittertennhof farmstead built using timber-block construction, first mentioned in 1416. This type of house combines living quarters, a stable and a barn under one roof. There is no chimney: smoke escapes through the roof and dries the grain stored on the upper floor. This example shows how construction and use are connected: living and farm areas are housed under one roof, while the smoke outlet also serves to dry the grain.

Practical craftsmanship is also part of the cultural offering. The farm and open-air museum offers workshops, including ones on making traditional fences. This offers a different way to engage with the site than viewing the farmstead: here, the focus is on a specific craft, while there it is on the building style and its functions.

Mondseeberg: Views and Hiking Trails

The Mondseeberg area in Tiefgraben is known for its panoramic views. Since autumn 2019, the Kulmspitz observation tower has stood at the summit, offering panoramic views of Mondsee. Tiefgraben has numerous hiking trails, including routes to Kolomanskirche; six marked hiking trails lead to Radstatt Chapel. For planning a hike, you can choose between Kolomanskirche as a historic destination and Radstatt Chapel as the destination of marked trails.

Churches, Chapels and Special Points Along the Way

Kolomanskirche is considered Europe’s oldest wooden church. Radstatt Chapel is tucked away in the forest on the ridge of Mondseeberg at an elevation of 994 m. The wooden Ritzinger Forest Chapel stands in the forest along the hiking trail to Kolomannsberg; it was already there around 1900. The Heilig-Geist wayside shrine is a stop on the Rogation procession from Seegruber to Radstatt, while hikers like to take a break at Frischling Chapel. These places offer something for different interests: historic architecture, a forest setting, a particular Rogation procession or a rest along the way. The two dates can be understood in different ways: 1416 is the year the Mondseer Rauchhaus was first mentioned; the Ritzinger Forest Chapel was already there around 1900. One date therefore marks a first mention, while the other indicates approximately when the chapel already existed.
