In Gries, several travel interests can be explored through specific details: swimming at Plomberg, a cycling tour through the village, hikes in the surrounding area and cultural history. When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to start by deciding what matters most: should your stay focus mainly on time by the water, cycling, a particular hike or historical background? Elevation gain, walking time, trail markings and building history provide different points of comparison.

Swimming at Plomberg

The Plomberg swimming spot is idyllically located in Plomberg/Gries below the Drachenwand and is accessible at any time. Near Gries, a small footbridge crosses the Klausbach; a short walk further on takes you to the small Plomberg waterfall. The two water destinations offer different options for planning your day: the swimming spot is primarily for spending time by the water, while the waterfall is reached via a footbridge and a short walk.

Compare hikes

The fitness trail near Gries is an easy circular hike with around 125 metres of elevation gain and about two hours of walking at a leisurely pace. It is suitable for families.

The Mondsee Panoramatrail has 606 metres of elevation gain on the ascent. Compared with the fitness trail’s approximately 125 metres of elevation gain, this is considerably more. This comparison helps you assess the hiking options by ascent; for the fitness trail, the approximate walking time and easy rating are also relevant. You can also start the Mondsee Panoramatrail at the St. Lorenz/Mondsee Gries bus stop. If you plan to start there, check the bus connection for your travel date.

Cycling through Gries

The cycling tour Around Lake Mondsee passes through Gries on the way to Scharfling. It is signposted R2 and designated as the Salzkammergut Cycle Path. The route through the village, its direction towards Scharfling and the R2 markings give you specific points of reference for assessing the tour.

Chapels and history

The history of the Hanslbauer Chapel connects a personal reason with a later consecration. After Josef Schachl (Hanslbauer) recovered from a serious operation in January 2016, he wanted to build the chapel as a sign of gratitude. It was built in memory of Josef’s life’s work and out of gratitude. It was consecrated during a church service on 15 September 2017. The story can thus be traced from the decision made after the operation to the consecration the following year.

The Thekla Chapel near Gries was built in 1864 in gratitude for a rescue. Also nearby, at the foot of the Drachenwand, is the WistaudermĂĽhle, built in the 19th century. The two places offer different historical themes: gratitude following a rescue and the construction history of a mill.
